We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Molly Winters a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Molly, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Being a business owner can be really hard sometimes. It’s rewarding, but most business owners we’ve spoken sometimes think about what it would have been like to have had a regular job instead. Have you ever wondered that yourself? Maybe you can talk to us about a time when you felt this way?
I love my job. I work with the coolest people, I get to hear all about the amazing things they do, and then I get to sit down and write about it. Pretty golden, in my opinion. . . . most days.
Nine days out of ten, I’m definitely happier as a business owner and so thankful I started my business. But catch me on that tenth day and I might tell you a different story!
Most recently, I got the hair-brained idea of hosting my very first virtual event called the Business Simplicity Summit — to help business owners cut the BS from business. But rather than take a few months to plan it, I decided to dive headfirst into planning and crank things out in about 45 days. I definitely don’t advise that!
There’s so much to juggle when planning an online event — finding speakers, coordinating schedules, writing and designing all the promotional materials, — and that’s all before the event itself. And I’m still continuing to write for my clients during it all.
I’ve definitely had days where I think, “I’ve made a huge mistake,” like Gob from Arrested Development. But overall, as I get further along in the process I remind myself that doing things that scare us is what helps us grow — as business owners and individuals. Plus, I’m seeing a dream of mine come together before my very eyes, so that’s pretty cool.
And yes, some days I dream of going back to being a barista (like during my college years) with an endless supply of espresso, but I always come back around to loving my business.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m a copywriter who specializes in writing for professional organizers and designers because I was a professional organizer myself — many years ago!
I’ve been writing since I was a kid, when I would haul out my folks’ electronic ’80s-era typewriter and spin some wild tales (heavily inspired by The Babysitter’s Club and Nancy Drew). After college, I worked in the marketing department of a large company and discovered a passion for copywriting.
Now, I love to write for business owners who help people love their homes, but struggle with what to write on their websites, email sequences, sales pages, and blogs. I have a knack for listening to a client and then writing in their style and voice while increasing sales through a deeper connection with their readers.
This year, I’m adding writing courses to my programs to help those entrepreneurs who can’t afford to hire a copywriter to do it for them and are on a DIY budget.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I think it really helped that I owned my own organizing business, Simply Organized LLC, years ago. Professional organizers and designers have responded really well to that because they trust that I know the lingo, motivation, and struggles of their industry. I truly understand what’s it like to be on both sides because now I live life as a busy mom with a house full of chaos! I can understand my client’s perspectives, as well as what their clients are going through. It helps me craft their message in a way that really resonates with their ideal people.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I love connecting with people, so it’s really rewarding for me to help my clients build a deeper connection with their readers. I think that’s why I love writing for organizers so much — they’re truly helping people change their homes and lives. Getting organized is almost always about SO much more than just stuff. When I can write words that help bridge the gap between people struggling with clutter at home and the people that can help them feel better, it makes me feel good, too!
