Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Molly Wheatley. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Molly, thanks for joining us today. How did you scale up? What were the strategies, tactics, meaningful moments, twists/turns, obstacles, mistakes along the way? The world needs to hear more realistic, actionable stories about this critical part of the business building journey. Tell us your scaling up story – bring us along so we can understand what it was like making the decisions you had, implementing the strategies/tactics etc.
When I first started my business, I had no clue what direction it would eventually take. Being a full-time teacher and running a business isn’t always easy. I knew I wanted to help teachers start a profitable tutoring business like I had done while teaching, but I also knew I didn’t want to trade all my time for money. I started a Teachers Pay Teachers store so I could tutor less. That eventually led to creating a course and a mastermind to help teachers and tutors do the same. The biggest mistake I made in the beginning was having shiny object syndrome and once I kept “the main thing, the main thing” (like Stephen Covey says), I had more success. I was able to hire out more projects in my business and scale.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
As a classroom teacher, I was asked to tutors former students. I didn’t have a business set up yet but quickly learned I could make great money tutoring just a handful of kids each week. I was able to pay off my car quickly and travel to Egypt and the UK the year my tutoring business really took off. I created a course called Tutorpreneur Academy™ to teach people how to set up a legitimate tutoring business so they could learn from my mistakes and make great money right from the start. I also started a Teachers Pay Teachers store so I didn’t always have to trade all my time for money and make passive income. I wanted to help the teachers and tutors in my program do the same, so I created a course called From Zero To Cha-Ching to teach them how to make money on Teachers Pay Teachers. I later created a mastermind for people who wanted to even more results in their stores.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I’ve built my audience on social media and YouTube organically, always without paid ads. I use IG stories to build connections with my audience. It’s always fun to have someone join my courses or mastermind and tell me that I’m just like they thought I would be from Instagram. My best advice is when you have an online business, you have to show up and be authentic.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
I would definitely tell anyone to start their email list. I have lessons in my courses on this and always tell my students you own your email list but you don’t own your social media account. It’s great to build your business on social media but you should always be directing people to your lead magnet to get them on your email list.
