Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Molly Silverman. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Molly , thanks for joining us today. Can you share an anecdote or story from your schooling/training that you feel illustrates what the overall experience was like?
I went to the Jean Madeline Aveda Institute in South Philly for cosmetology school. There’s a couple of ways that stylists can get their chair after completing beauty school; some people come out of school and get a chair at a high volume place like Supercuts or the Hair Cuttery, and some people get a job at a high end salon shampooing and eventually begin to assist a seasoned stylist. I was interested in immersing myself in the craft of hairdressing and finding my niche so I opted to work my way up as an assistant. I assisted for about four years at some of the best salons in Philadelphia. My time as an assistant was invaluable. Now that I’m behind the chair full time, I still devote days off to education. Trends and techniques are always evolving so I want to make sure I’m keeping myself sharp.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Molly Silverman and I am a hair colorist and stylist on the Main Line. I am endlessly inspired by the constant evolution of the beauty industry. I work with all hair types and textures, but caring for and cutting curly hair Is something that I’m super passionate about. As a hair colorist, my focus is on creating beautiful natural looking color; Golden blondes, spicy reds, rich brunettes. If you’re looking for electric blue hair, I’m not your girl. My ethos as a stylist is hair health comes first, color second. I find joy in caring for my clients hair and creating color and cuts that work best for them and enhance their natural beauty. Im my free time, I make hair oils and curl gels in my kitchen.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
The pandemic and subsequent four month salon lockdown was a pivotal moment in my career. Anyone who knows me knows I’m somewhat of a germaphobe, so the pandemic triggered my anxiety in such a way initially that I wasn’t sure I would be able to work in close contact with people again. I started making house calls in and around Philly in the spring/summer of 2020. Despite my fears, just getting my hands in hair again and connecting with clients reminded me that I was born to do hair.

Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
Having an unwavering commitment to your health and overall well being; setting healthy boundaries, being physically active, stretching, getting adequate rest, fueling your body with nutritious food, spending time outdoors, etc. I always try to make sure that my life outside of the salon supports my life inside of the salon. I love what I do and I want to do it for as long as possible!
