We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Molly Salerno a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Molly, thanks for joining us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
When I first started representing the company, I had ZERO clue what to do with makeup. I didn’t even own a mascara. My friend had watched me struggle for several years hurt by my moms alcohol addiction and she gave me some long lasting lip color called LipSense and said, “Here put this on, you’ll feel better” AND it actually worked. So I decide to become a social seller and represent this company that has an incredible mission statement for helping women create their own businesses and also a foundation to help women and children in need. Fast forward 4 years into growing my business, I knew I had the potential for more. I decided to LEVEL UP and get my makeup artist certification with the company. It was a rigorous but exciting program – I needed to do 40 makeovers and do 20,000 in retail sales. With the help of my incredible community I have worked hard to build, I achieved this in 3 months time. I am a hands on learner and the program allowed me to practice and give me even more confidence. Deciding to be a social seller and a make up artist, you have to learn to not worry about what others think of you. You have to do what makes you happy. You learn to know WHY you do what you do, and allow your passion and personality to show through. Your only obstacle for being successful as a social seller is yourself.
After getting my MUA Certification, I went on to get my Skincare Pro Certification which required 40 skincare assessments and an additional $40,000 retail sales.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?
I briefly touched on this on the first question. In late 2016/early 2017 I was in a very rough spot. Navigating life as a first time mom, working full time and watching my mom struggle with alcohol addiction. A friend gave me some long lasting lip color, and said put this on – you’ll feel better. I loved the confidence a silly little tube of lipstick gave me, I started to talk about it online with friends. The response was overwhelming and I became an independent distributor for an international cosmetics and skincare company. 3 days after I began my career with the company – my mom unexpectedly passed away at the age of 56.
I decided to turn my new found love for makeup into a healthy way to grieve my mom and kept busy during what was the hardest time in my life. I found an incredible community of women, who LIKE ME did not know anything about makeup and wanted to learn. I spent the first few years of my business LEARNING as I went, and realized that as long as you are relatable, never force a sale and remember to be offering a service – that sales would organically happen.
Aside from the struggles I had with losing my mom I had struggled with eating disorders for most my adulthood. I opened up about these online and decided to have weightloss surgery in August 2019 to get my health in control. I have successfully kept off 80 lbs for 3 years. In March 2020, my family took a huge leap of faith and moved from California to Texas for my husband to take a new job. It was then that my business truly soared. During the pandemic, everything was online. I grew my social media presence by showing up daily, connecting with other women who wanted an outlet like makeup was to me and also women who had gone through weightloss surgery.
This all just goes to say that my business is so much more than makeup. When you are doing social selling it is about creating your own identity and community aside from the company you represent. I am so proud to say in 2021 I became a certified makeup artist with the company and I am in the top 20 for the US for personal sales. I have had the honor to speak at multiple conferences as a trainer and keynote speaker to inspire other women on how to grow their social selling businesses too.
The cosmetics I use are vegan, non gmo, weightless, smudgeproof and made in the USA. I love to educate women on the quality of the products and teach easy makeup looks for the no makeup gals, busy mamas, or even the makeup junkies. One of my favorite things to do is provide one on one makeup tutorials in my home office I call the Babe Cave. On a typical day you will find me doing makeup tutorials, spending time with my family or making funny reels on Instagram!
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
When I first started, I was PAINFULLY SHY and nervous. I found I did much better one on one, and in person. However, that is not the only way to grow when you want to be a successful social seller. I decided to find a few women who I looked up to – and learn from them. I watched, and then I took my own spin on their ideas and it really helped me. I found that for the first couple of years I would only do live videos, photos, or instagram stories if I had a full face of makeup. But that wasn’t relatable! So my biggest piece of advice is to allow your customers and community into other areas of your life. People need to KNOW YOU, LIKE YOU & TRUST YOU before they will ever order from you. They are buying from you because they like you first, products second.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding thing for me is helping other women feel more confident with their makeup routine. Teaching something as simple as how to properly fill in eyebrows, or choosing the right shade of lip color. I love to teach and encourage women to find a creative outlet (mine is makeup of course!) and also to find a passion and not to be afraid to share it with others! – I learned years ago that the opinions of others do not change the reason why I do what I do.
