We were lucky to catch up with Molly Reed recently and have shared our conversation below.
Molly , appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
As a young, inspired post grad living in NYC getting a job in fashion made sense. I knew part of my calling had to do with beauty and so I set my sights on Ralph Lauren. I worked my way up to an internship in their RLX dept. where I quickly learned the inner workings of corporate America. It was in that environment I found myself asking the question; why are women so ruthless behind your back? Are all corporate jobs designed to pit women against one another? How can I build a career and build a life, are these two things mutually exclusive? My mind was anxious. Yet I had a peace knowing God was the captain of my ship.
“Build a new Girl Culture!” I heard one afternoon while looking out at a meadow of Aspen trees. “But how?” I responded. “I will show you.” And the rest is history. Waverly Girl was a divinely inspired business; a platform that would restore girlhood, female values and genuine sisterhood that was so deeply missing from corporate culture and society at large.
This was a counter-feminist movement. Waverly Girl would be apart of a 4th wave of “feminism”, but instead of using the controversial title we would call it, Biblical Femininity. How did God, our author and creator, design women to function? How can we apply our brilliant developments of modernity and pair them with Biblical principles that cut to the core of every female heart? Waverly Girl is a movement for girls starting in 1st grade. We are developing classes, content, programs and products that reinforce Biblical Femininity.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My background is art and fashion with a side of journalism. I love to write, tell stories and create beautiful things.
Waverly Girl is a feminine brand, designed to inspire girls of all ages. As I set out to create a lifestyle and purpose driven Company, I knew that highlighting femininity would be our most important ally. Girls and women long for their language to be celebrated and in a world that seems to manipulate it, Waverly Girl was going to not only do it beautifully but truthfully.
Waverly Girl is a movement for girls starting in 1st grade. We are developing classes, content, programs and products that reinforce Biblical Femininity. Content that breaths life into girls growing hearts ultimately leading them close to their calling and purpose.
Due to the authenticity of our source (the Bible), we have seen Waverly Girl improve girls confidence. Eliminate mental health issues. Develop strong faith and purpose. All fundamental pillars needed to develop a healthy, happy girl.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Building relationships is the single most important thing when starting a business. How you communicate both your personal and professional vision will create a circle a trust. That trust will grow over time and bless you as you step out, try new things and preserver.
Entrepreneurship is largely about preserving. In order to stick with your idea and calling you must have solid voices championing your work, encouraging and giving you sound advice. You are a compilation of the voices pouring into you. Be wise about who you let advise your business.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
I operate largely through word of mouth, I think when you have a small business, and focus largely on building strong relationships, word of mouth allows you to scale at an appropriate pace. While I can get a bit antsy for things to move quickly, I know that every day I commit to what is in front of me, connect with people honestly, the rest will take care of itself.
