We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Molly Miller. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Molly below.
Molly, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
I feel super fortunate to work with a bunch of artists and musicians that inspire me. But one of the gems of my heart is my own project, Molly Miller Trio. This is the place where I get to express myself most clearly. I get to work with two of my dear friends and band mates- Jennifer Condos and Jay Bellerose. We write music together, tour together, and explore together. This group has been essential to my growth. It’s been an important place for me to develop my own sound – as a composer and player. Keep an eye out for our next record, which is coming out at the top of 2024.
Molly, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I have been playing guitar since I was 7 years old. I grew up in a family band with my four siblings. Our band defined my childhood. I went to USC to study Studio Guitar at Thornton School of Music- I ended up staying there for 9 years. I got my BM, MM, and DMA (Doctorate of Musical Arts). I didn’t plan on it when I started, but I am so happy I did it. I now am actually a professor at USC, teaching some of the same classes I took when I was a student there. It’s real fun!
I am a working guitarist – I have my own trio, Molly Miller Trio, play for artists such as Jason Mraz, Sin Bandera, Lily Mae Harrington, Leslie Stevens, and other acts. Music is my life. Everyday I am playing guitar, at sessions, in rehearsals, on tour, teaching or at a gig. Whether I am on tour or at home, I am performing 2-5 times a week. It keeps me busy, happy, and challenged. It’s incredible to do the thing you love every day.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
When I am in the flow. Most days I am doing the thing I want to do – whether it’s a show, session, or teaching, I feel fortunate to be there. I love the juggling act of bouncing from one thing to the next. The most rewarding part is finding the flow state within it. Whether I am at a rehearsal, performance, or at home playing and find a state flow – when I am no longer thinking, but rather in a place that feels holy.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Expressing myself with the utmost clarity. This is a driving force for me and something that never ends. It’s not just about “getting better at guitar”, but rather getting more clear and precise in self expression. That goal pushes me to practice, play as many gigs as possible, learn as many genres and songs as possible, study music, and also take in the world around me, because that is important as well.
