Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Molly Lewison. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Molly thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Do you think your parents have had a meaningful impact on you and your journey?
I’ve been extremely lucky to have parents that encouraged me to chase my dreams unapologetically (even when it scared them). My father instilled professionalism, hard work and respect. My mother encouraged my adventurous side and the combination has prepared me for a fulfilling life.
My parents generation is one that sees the value in consistency and moving up the ladder. I’m so thankful my parents accepted me as I moved sideways through life. They often say, “Molly happens” which sometimes made me feel like I was reckless but now I know they’re proud that I always find a way to make it happen.
When I decided it was time to open my own business they have gone above and beyond. Whether it’s receiving my packages, letting me use their basement to design in, or borrowing ladders they have been available for that.
I believe in myself because they have always believed in me.
Molly , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Double Dutch Floral is named after my grandma who was born in the Netherlands, the birthplace of the Floral Industry. My path to the Floral industry was not linear but definitely adjacent. One of my first jobs and longest careers was Wedding/ Event Planning. For as long as I’ve been a professional I have interacted with florists. After seven years in the event world burn-out began to set in. After a long day of work I asked my co-worker, “what do you want to be when you grow up”, I love this question because its playful verbiage allows for a child-like response with little constraints. My 45 year old co-worker responded, a Drag Queen and then redirected the question to me. Without hesitation I said, “a florist.” This was the exact moment I decided I needed to actually honor my secret dream.
Two weeks later I was interviewing at a small, wonderful floral shop, Papillon Floral. They took a risk on me and taught me everything I know. I was hooked immediately. I had never felt so inspired and fulfilled. That feeling never went away. I moved across the country back to Vail Colorado where I worked at another very successful shop. There I learned more about the operation side of a shop and grew my skills until it was my time to pursue my own path.
I opened Double Dutch Floral in May of 2023 with a strong desire to bring a personalized experience to the wedding industry. I take my time to get to know my clients and their taste. I bring emotion into my design studio and channel each couple’s vision. My airy and whimsical designs truly bring personality to your special day.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Word of mouth is the most influential way to capture clients. Having another professional vouch for you speaks volumes. When I started out I participated in as many styled shoots as I could. This allowed me to do a few things, network, gather content, and practice my craft with little risk. All have been invaluable however having my new industry peers refer clients to me has been beyond helpful.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Creatives put themselves into their work. This is an extremely vulnerable position to be in. At Double Dutch I put a lot of emotion into my designs and when I can recreate that emotion in a floral arrangement I feel so fulfilled! As a wedding florist I get the privilege of being a small part of someone’s big day and being able to make their vision come to life is the best feeling!
