We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Molly Hake a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Molly, thanks for joining us today. Alright – so having the idea is one thing, but going from idea to execution is where countless people drop the ball. Can you talk to us about your journey from idea to execution?
Going from the idea to the execution generally ends up being even more challenging and involved than one anticipated. On the other hand, some things can end up being even easier and simpler than we anticipate. In my journey to write and publish my first novel, I had many moments on either end of the spectrum. It was certainly a very involved and time consuming task to take a general concept of a plot to a fully written, edited, and published book, but it was also perfectly achievable. I believe that many people never start a project like that just because they think it’s a far bigger deal than it is. Of course it takes time and work and it isn’t always easy, but the first step towards the execution of the idea is to choose to head that direction and then stick with it. I had to commit to actually finishing the book and then actually publishing the book. It is amazing to be on the other side of a project like that and to look back on all the challenges I faced to get to where I am now. I can say that it has been so incredibly worth it, and it has launched me forward to write more books that I hope to publish before too long.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Molly Kay and I am an author! I have written and published one novel so far, but hope to have others coming soon. The book that has already been released is a faith-based, historical fiction, romance novel set during the Revolutionary War. My hope is that my writing helps to shine light on the common emotional experiences and challenges, particularly among Christians, and encourage readers in their personal walks through those things. I have always enjoyed finding pieces of myself in the lives of the characters I’m reading about, and I hope that my readers can see the same in the characters I have created. There is so much that so many people deal with in their own hearts and minds and seeing a fictional character face those things in a really life-like way can inspire us to overcome and grow.
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I definitely wish I had known about how great it is to publish through Amazon’s KDP program earlier. I went through another company with the first edition of my book and it was expensive and still left me very disappointed with my book’s cover and layout. Now that I have been able to design it all and publish it myself, I have a book that I can be truly proud of on the whole.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me, I think the most rewarding aspect of being an author has been to hear how my book has impacted the lives of others. I’ve had girls tell me that it just resonated so deeply with them to hear about the main character’s, Charlotte’s, experiences. I’ve had older women say that they just couldn’t put the book down and stayed up till all hours of the night to find out what was going to happen. I’ve even felt for myself what it is to be reminded of such valuable truths by reading my own book. I can’t wait to be able to give my readers more books to bring light to their lives.
