We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Mollie Mason a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Mollie , appreciate you joining us today. Let’s jump back to the first dollar you earned as a creative? What can you share with us about how it happened?
I started painting as a hobby about 8 years ago. In 2021, I was asked to paint my first commission. It was a 20″ x 24″ painting of a dog. When I put myself out there that I was accepting commissions, I was overwhelmed with the amount of support from family and friends. I have even been asked by strangers to paint or sketch something, and I have even shipped my artwork out of state. I used to take on any subject matter, such as painting a house, pet portraits, people portraits, and so on. I really love painting weddings and landscapes. I have been putting my focus on live wedding painting these days!

Mollie , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I stumbled across a live wedding painter on TikTok about two years ago. I knew that I had to try it! I was struggling to find my niche as an artist until I found live wedding painting. I love the adrenaline rush of arriving to a wedding with a blank canvas and having a finished piece by the end of the night. I forget that guests are watching me and just focus on capturing the moment.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is being able to capture a particular moment in time that can’t be captured by film or camera. People love to see themselves in art, and I love making people happy with my craft. I love giving Brides and grooms a lasting heirloom from their special day.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
When I first started my business Mollie Mason Art in 2021, I had no idea what I was doing. I tried so hard to get my business up and going with no clear direction. I didn’t know my target audience, I didn’t know my value, and I didn’t know what type of artwork to create. When I pinpointed live wedding painting as my focus, the target audience found me. I wish I could go back in time and tell my self it will be okay and building a successful business takes time.
