We recently connected with Mojisola Okuyemi and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Mojisola thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Naming anything – including a business – is so hard. Right? What’s the story behind how you came up with the name of your brand?
Pearl Honey Spreads : Pearl is my daughter’s name and the brand was started based on the need to eliminate processed sugar from her diet. Honey is the base for all of our products including all of our fruit spreads.

Mojisola, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Have you ever been curious why there are different names for sugar (sucrose, fructose, corn syrup, etc.) amongst the lists of ingredients on a jar of jam or jelly? In addition to this list of ingredients that you can’t even pronounce, the fruit, which is meant to be the main nourishment, has the least amount of grams, why is that? These were some of the questions I couldn’t get answers to when my daughter Pearl asked me for PB&J. As a mother who is very particular about what I feed her, I couldn’t bring myself to give that to my child. So, Pearl Honey Spreads came into existence out of a need to eliminate processed sugar from my daughter’s diet.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I would say stay through to the purpose and mission on why you started the business/company. We pride ourselves with only using known, clean and few ingredients, and we intend to stay that way.
I remember a time when we were sourcing for a co-packer. During our initial meeting I was told that our recipes would need to be modified before they could take us on.
We rejected the proposal and had to go with another partner that aligned with our mission and vision of clean and healthy spreads.

Okay – so how did you figure out the manufacturing part? Did you have prior experience?
Yes, we still do manufacture all of our products, especially our fruit spreads in small batches by hand at a commercial kitchen. We have actually now identified a co-packing partner (after vetting so many ) that can help us with production as we continue to grow.
My advice is stay through to your instinct, if it doesn’t feel right don’t force it. We had to say no to a few good manufacturers but the decision worked out better for us.
