We were lucky to catch up with Mohammad Sadat recently and have shared our conversation below.
Mohammad, appreciate you joining us today. Do you wish you had waited to pursue your creative career or do you wish you had started sooner?
Honestly, I think I started it just at the right time. I’m a firm believer in everything happens for a reason, and everything happens in the time it’s been ordained to happen.
Perhaps I wasn’t ready mentally or even emotionally to take on the challenges I eventually faced, and of course, still do.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My journey first began in 2016. I was going through a very difficult time in life, a lot was changing, and I needed an outlet to physically see how I felt. I know that sounds weird, but in my head, I’ve always seen music, always felt very particular scenes from movies. I’ve always wanted to direct films, and every time I hear a song that moves me, I immediately create a visual scene that I feel would match.
I took that energy and bought a DSLR camera. It was a basic cheap Canon T3i, but it did the trick. I honestly hadn’t touched a camera since my dad gave me his Minolta when I was kid. I guess you could say it runs in the family.
I began taking pictures, trying to recreate through people, how I felt inside. I don’t know if anyone else does photography that way, but it’s the way I still love doing it.
From there I slowly got into videography, mainly doing music videos. Coincidentally, I had a friend reach out to me for a music video, Iconic Bond. I listened to his music, and I knew instantly he would make it. Unqestionably. He has such a talent. In fact, I told him I would like to be his Creative Manager – do everything creative for him, photos, videos, branding etc.
We developed a deep connection and brotherhood and now I manage him as an Artist, do his creative work, and produce music.
In the fall of 2020, I decided to launch my own streetwear brand, KHAN Clothing Co., aimed at blending elements of Central Asian cultures and the East Coast atmosphere into a minimalistic style.
This past year, 2023, Iconic Bond and myself launched a non-profit organization, The House of Creatives, that is geared to paving a path for under-represented creatives.
This is what has honestly been keeping me busy.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I believe in the golden rule: do unto others what you’d like done to you. I am practicing Muslim, and Islam dictates all my decision making. My goal and mission is to spread goodness and help others as much as I can using my talents and skills.
I believe everyone is born with certain talens and skills, and we just have to figure out how to use them for good.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is watching your craft inspire someone. As a creative, you’re always trying to be perfect, and want nothing but 100% from yourself. And it’s so hard letting go of this mindset. At my lowest points, when I have felt like giving up, and just being “normal” like everyone else, I’ve had some of the closet people to me tell me that if I were to inspire or help even one person, that’s enough. And I truly believe that. Helping someone, inspiring people, even if it’s one person, changing their life for the better, that to me is the most rewarding aspect.
