Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Mohajera Sekander. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Mohajera, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about the things you feel your parents did right and how those things have impacted your career and life.
My parents did a lot of things right in regards to resilience, service to others, and fully supporting our family of 8.
Their strong faith in God, leaving behind their life overseas (Afghanistan) to provide their children a better life and education. They have both managed to live the American Dream to make something of yourself as a refugee from a war torn country. That showed me the amount of sacrifice and resilience they had. My father opened his own retail business, in which I helped manage while in college. My mother was a stay at home mom and devoted wife who fully supported my father. They demonstrated team work and the importance of love and support. In turn, my father inspired me to pursue my passion as an entrepreneur at the young age of 20. I worked a full time job in retail, studied full time for my bachelors degree in business, and did creative makeup work. I wanted to make my parents proud. I paid it forward to them to become proud parents who provided me with a better education and life. I received my B.A. in Business emphasized in Marketing. A major proud moment for us. But they also had many trials and hardships, which I learned from, yet they never gave up. All of my upbringing really has shaped me into the person I am now and the journey I am taking to strengthen my creative work and essentially serve others.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I began my beauty journey as a holiday hire at the age of 17. I then discovered a hidden talent for makeup and all things beauty. Within 3 years, I developed my skills and craft and offered my makeup services to clients starting in California to Denver to now Dallas, all the while completing my Bachelor’s degree in Business. Due to the pandemic, I ventured from face-to-face to online client sessions and expanding my social media presence via my Instagram Classygal1. Also, this allowed me to develop even more skills and reach a wider audience. My journey continues in makeup and beauty by enhancing my personal brand, which is “Happiness looks Gorgeous on you.” As a full-time, mom, wife, and beauty expert, I strive to bring “Happiness’ to all of my clients by helping them feel and look beautiful inside and out.
As a full time, mom there are always struggles with time management, but developing the skill of prioritization, I learned the ability to fully commit to my family and clients.
I’m a Professorial Makeup Artist with 20 years of experience in the luxury cosmetics industry and medical-grade skincare. Therefore, I specialize in customized skincare consultations and hair and makeup tutorials which are quick and easy to do and helping women feel and look their best. I’m proud of being a full-time mommy and still helping clients with their beauty needs. With all of the beauty experts on social media, I separate myself by keeping my beauty consultations specific to my client’s needs and making sure it’s quick & easy for them. Likewise, during my face-to-face sessions, I apply my beauty skills efficiently and effortlessly. I have learned the logistics of social media to enhance my brand. In addition, I have managed to teach my clients how to do their makeup via online sessions. I utilize Zoom calls and Google Duo for customized sessions to give my clients what they need when they need it.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I took a risk during the pandemic to start my content creator work in social media, Instagram mainly. I was doing freelance makeup work for various beauty brands within major luxury retailers like Neiman Marcus and Nordstrom aside from my personal makeup work. All the while I was marketing beauty brands with a brokerage company I’m also working with as an Account Coordinator. In the past 5 years I have been doing my content work, I managed to market one of the brands on a national level in both retailers. Prioritizing my time and managing everything is definitely challenging, yet I am resilient enough to handle it.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
In one phrase, “keep going, stay focused.”
I had to really prioritize my time. I shuffled being a mom, wife, freelance Makeup Artist for different brands for sales support and brand education. I also traveled heavily recently in the past few months, almost every week to train and educate, network, and build brand awareness for the beauty brand I was marketing. Additionally, I had to take care of myself. I live a fit and healthy lifestyle. I am not young, lol. I try to incorporate the importance of having healthier eating habits, motivating others to workout as those are key to inner beauty and health which then turns into looking and feeling even more beautiful. But let me tell you it has all been such a challenge to do, yet it totally illustrates my resilience to work under pressure and time management.
Hence stay focused and keep going. Don’t let anything stop you from pursuing your talent.
