We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Moabit. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Moabit below.
Moabit, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s jump back to the first dollar you earned as a creative? What can you share with us about how it happened?
I was like 10 years old when I got my first dollar for drawing. I loved this cartoon on TV, and after each show, I spent an hour sketching the characters on a regular paper.
One day, I showed my drawings to my school friends, and they liked them a lot. Then, one buddy really wanted one of them, but I was too shy to ask for money. So, I said, “How about a milkshake instead?” My friend said yes, and soon everyone in our class wanted my drawings in exchange for milkshakes.
I kept sketching every day, and I tried all the flavours at the school cafeteria. But after a while, I got tired of them milkshakes, so I asked for real money.
That’s how I started making my first dollar as a creative. Such a cool adventure in retrospect!
Moabit, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My passion, which I’ve pursued for a significant number of years, revolves around the art of defacing US dollar bills. I am endlessly captivated by the creative potential I can unlock within this singular canvas. I use markers and aerosol spray in order to infuse my pieces with vibrant expressions. My artistic identity straddles the realms of street art and pop art, with my creations spanning themes of contemporary events and visually gratifying aesthetics by consistently incorporating the dollar bill itself into my designs.
The $1 note holds profound significance for me on multiple levels. It represents not only the modest value of a single unit but also symbolizes themes of wealth, democracy, and corruption. Consequently, my pieces often interweaves these facets, featuring characters and imagery that reflect these dynamics. The dollar bill serves as both my medium and message.
Some of my works take the form of optical illusions, while others narrate fleeting stories. You can encounter a vast collection of my works in galleries, primarily across Europe but also spanning the globe.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I take pleasure in uncovering clever designs that possess multiple layers of meaning, particularly those related to the themes of corruption and wealth. Moreover, I am captivated by the creative process of integrating well-known cartoon characters into my designs.
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I deeply wish I had discovered the freedom of my creative journey earlier and had knowledge of platforms where I could connect with my collectors. The more collectors I engage with, the stronger my motivation becomes, sparking a continuous flow of creative ideas. This journey has been instrumental in helping me find the path that truly resonates with my passions.
