We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Mjsraven Pullen a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, MJSRAVEN thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Has your work ever been misunderstood or mischaracterized?
Being a female Michael Jackson tribute artist what is normally a male dominated genre was always a mild tribulation for me due to having to work harder at proving myself when I felt there was no need to. The industry always when it came down to me loved what I did With speechless but yet didn’t know where to place me because I was a woman paying tribute to a man but as the years progressed and I’ve been in this field for 30 years, plus I have earned my right and standing amongst my male counterparts and even gained their respect Because of it. There has been occasions here and there where I have been turned down once they found out, I was a woman because they didn’t feel people would be interested in in what I had to do that people would be more in tune to want to see a male, but once they gave me an opportunity, there was no questions asked, and they had an abundance of an audience. I have successfully accomplished a lot of goals as a female MJ tribute artist from performing off Broadway to performing at Las Vegas casinos to being honored as an ambassador for peace in a humanitarian organization to being in a top selling photography book honoring tribute artist, as well as being recognized and respected with industry, celebrities that I grew up being inspired by and having them come to my shows and giving them the greatest show that I could. I currently have finished in post production for my documentary about my career which will be live streamed January 7, 2025 across all social medias.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I have been performing professionally and as a celebrity female Michael Jackson tribute artist since the age of 15 I’ve been in this field for 30 years plus. The only problems or issues I may have come across was being a woman in a predominantly male dominated field, and proving myself standing next to the others. What sets me apart I’m just me a woman paying homage to the greatest entertainer in the world.. I am most proud of having the honor to do what I do and inspiring other women of younger years to pursue their dreams no matter what. I can be found on most social media platforms from Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Clapper, YouTube, and my website is in preproduction.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist in my field is being able to inspire women of all ages and children specially little girls that they can be anything. They wanna be to show them that if I can do it so can you to inspire them to be great and to love themselves for who they are and their God-given talents to give them a visual of what strength looks like as a woman during the most adversity in the world no matter if the doors close on you, you must learn to kick the doors down to never take no for an answer and there is no skies the limit. It’s so much more if you work hard and focus on your dream in the words of Michael Jackson she’s invincible.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
The particular goal or mission driving, my creative journey has been to one day perform with the Jacksons themselves. I’ve had the honor of them respecting me and knowing me as a performer, paying homage to their family member and them sending me love and support so the goal and one of my dreams is to perform alongside them as Michael, even if it is just one time
