Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Miya Lewis . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Miya, appreciate you joining us today. Looking back at internships and apprenticeships can be interesting, because there is so much variety in people’s experiences – and often those experiences inform our own leadership style. Do you have an interesting story from that stage of your career that you can share with us?
I have had plenty of internships throughout my years in college. Some were better than other, but I can say I learned something at everyone.
My first intern, was with a Rebels Co founded by Karmen Ryden, During my freshman year of college, I was able to work with underground artists and DJ – some that have made the big names today. I learned new skills like pitch decks to organizing local showcases and cyphers! This experience was unpaid, but I learned quickly that every opportunity when you are establishing yourself doesn’t come with a dollar amount but the worth of relationships. Which is way more worthy than a dollar amount – depending on who those relationships are with.
By senior of college, I stated interning at Streets 94,5 and that internships was one for the books. Although it required a lot of time, and little flexibility. I appreciate the pressure I was under at the station. It made me a better writer, a better speaker, and overall forced by to step out my shell in a different way. Pressure can bust pipes but it can also make diamonds., and I definitely appreciate SOLO for the pressure he applied. As I look back today as an entrepreneur, and business owner myself. Everything I learned through that process, made me more diligent about the work I put out today
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
It’s always the questions about yourself personally that gets people stuck. However, I will do my best. My name is Miya Lewis. Serial entrepreneur, wife, and much more. I love people. From when I was child, I always seem to be the light in the room but that light I had in me, I always felt like I had to bring for other people than myself.
I knew at an early age, that connecting with others is my skill, and the power of word play. I think that’s why throughout my journey as an entrepreneur – I’d always ended up in a business where I am still serving people.
From creating my own branding agency Miya Burrus and Co helping small business with marketing and branding to now my transition into real estate. Servicing people never left my heart,
Anyone who knows me personally also knows how much I love helping my
Loved ones, and not always monetarily but just through conversations. I love talking, and I find communication is a medicine a lot of people don’t use in the everyday life.
Asking someone how the feel, or how their day was, is just as important and giving a gift to someone.
I guess it all flows back to me being a people person. I am just thankful to GOD, I have been able to use my natural people skills, and people pleasing antics have allowed me to create business that have made successful, while still loving on people at the same time.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
The biggest lesson I have learned this past couple of years, is understanding that serving people doesn’t mean that boundaries are not existent. When your a person like me – people pleaser energy it is easy to get caught up in helping people that your own boundaries can not be respected, the biggest thing that is important to me mastering, is boundaries! And having boundaries doesn’t change my heart for people. It just a reminder that before I help anyone. I must always help myself first.
Understanding that being selfish is not a bad thing for us as human, it’s important to have a balance of being selfish and selfless. Too much of either leaves you depleted.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
When me and husband started to shift in the real estate industry it was a big adjustment for me. Coming from a girl that has always been in branding and PR, is completely different than selling houses. However, with my pivot in my career switch, it has taught so much, and the super dope thing about being an entrepreneur regardless of the business is that, every business needs branding and marketing. Something that I have mastered and am able to use in any business I decide to go into
