Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Mixed by Jellz. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Mixed by, thanks for joining us today. Any thoughts about whether to ask friends and family to support your business. What’s okay in your view?
I don’t really ask any friends or family members to support anything I do. I feel if you see me promoting my business and I have to ask for your support, the support is not genuine. A lot of entrepreneurs really rely on their family and friends for support then get discouraged when they don’t get it. The way I look at it is why let the 15 people you know who didn’t support you control your business, why not focus on the billions of people in the world that you don’t know that will gladly support you.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I got my love for music from my cousin Duke (Rip). I used to go to Virginia and see him and his friends creating songs on a boom box. They would never let me record with them, they would just tell me to keep writing my thoughts, (probably because I sucked and they didn’t want to hurt my feelings lol). I never got the chance to record with them because when my cousin passed away the rest of his group disappeared, but when he passed I told myself I would put in the work to make it in his honor. I got my start in the music business first as a recording artist back in 1998. After many years of independent success I decided to make the change from in front of the mic to behind it. I started working as a Recording Engineer in 2013, and it wasn’t long before I realized that I had a skill people really needed. This skill, which is based on combining my artistic integrity with what my clients need, led to the creation of Mixed by JELLZ. Which is based on more than just delivering amazing audio of the very highest quality, it’s about the experience. When it comes to audio, my principles are tried and true. As a true artist, I help my clients create superb audio. I’m also a artist consultant. Long story short I help artists with marketing plans, project creation, fan engagement and more. I also am a songwriter, my main genre is R&B. I also have a YouTube channel where I help artist and engineers create better music
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I’m in a pivot phase right now. I moved from Baltimore to Atlanta a few months ago. In Baltimore my business was thriving. In Baltimore I had a consistent clientele, a commercial studio that I worked out of and a home studio where I did most of my mixing, writing and content creation. In Atlanta im basically starting over. I have a commercial studio that I am working out of, but my home studio is still in the process of being built so I had to drastically slow down on my YouTube content and the number of mixing jobs I have been accepting. In this down time I have been creating Templates for my website and I have also been drafting ebooks to better help artists and engineers
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
