We recently connected with Miu Haiti and have shared our conversation below.
Miu, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
Being an artist inevitably comes with taking risks on a regular basis. That being said, the biggest risk I’ve taken was to move to a new country and start my life all over from scratch 4 years ago. I was fortunate enough to build a beautiful music career in Haiti thanks to my loving fans, but I realized that I couldn’t reach my full potential there, I wanted to accomplish more on the international stage, and what better place to pursue that, than the United States, the land of dreams. It haven’t been easy, but I’m grateful for the support of family and friends who helped me fall back on my feet, so I can get back on the field. Now I’m represented by “Purfek Storm Management”, they understand me as an artist and respect my vision and aspirations. I couldn’t be more proud of my new project “In ‘Em face”, this music video definitely marks a new phase of my music career, the production team at “Purfek Storm Group” did a wonderful job with this Music Video and the fans are happy to see me back on the horse, and for that I’m truly grateful.
Miu, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My dad is a sax player who have played in many legendary haitian Konpa bands throughout the years. I was attracted to music from as far I can remember and I always knew deep within that I was meant to be an artist, I couldn’t put it into words back then. I loved drawing, reading, I was obsessed with literature, I started writing poetry quite early, I was in drama class and dance class at school, became a petite model as a teenager and was part of a cheerleader squad. Only then I made a new friend who was an event promoter at that time, he convinced me to take part of a music contest “Soley Sound System” I co-wrote and recorded my first single “Hot Boy” and my career took off from there.
For a big part of my career I’ve struggled with being seen as “too different”, I couldn’t fit in people’s boxes so I created my own lane. Sting said it well “Be yourself no matter what they say”, that’s my motto, because, your success lies in your uniqueness.
I cherish diversity, I believe the world should be colorful and differences should be celebrated. I grew up listening to lots of different music genres: ballads, R&B, hip hop, rock n’ roll, Latin, reggae, opera, folk, konpa etc and my music is influenced by all the good music I’ve appreciated in my life, so it won’t fit in a box most of the time and that’s ok. I think artist should be free to create without the strict restraints of genres and I don’t subscribe to the idea that a Jamaican artist can only make “reggae”, or a Haitian artist can only make “konpa”, with all due respect to the culture.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
The public can be very demanding with creatives, and quick to critique every little flaw in our projects. People need to know that creating takes budget, and the work and lifestyle they are demanding from their favorite artists is unattainable if they’re not supporting these creatives. In the case of music creators, It’s as simple as streaming the music, add it to your Playlist, watch the music video, share it with friends, go to the shows, buy the merch, make a donation. All of this help the artist keep the production going.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is to experience first hand the effect of your music on the audience. That’s why I love being on stage, it’s my favorite part of the job; to share feelings and emotions with a crowd through a song is like a communion. And when they sing along, the gates of heaven open up wide.
