Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Mitchell McNamara. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Mitchell, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Often outsiders look at a successful business and think it became a success overnight. Even media and especially movies love to gloss over nitty, gritty details that went into that middle phase of your business – after you started but before you got to where you are today. In our experience, overnight success is usually the result of years of hard work laying the foundation for success, but unfortunately, it’s exactly this part of the story that most of the media ignores. Can you talk to us about your scaling up story – what are some of the nitty, gritty details folks should know about?
So Cal Adult Softball started in 2012. A two man operation between my Dad and I. We started with recreational leagues and in the beginning we ran mostly coed recreational leagues. Over the past ten years we have incorporated the Bio Tech Softball Leagues. These leagues are designed for Bio-Tech and Pharmaceutical companies here in the San Diego area. Over the years 100s of different companies have played in our Spring and Fall Bio Tech leagues at Torrey Hills and our Summer Doyle Bio-Tech Park League. We also operate leagues for companies that have enough employees participating to have their own exclusive league. Being flexible with companies schedules has always been key to working with large groups in our experience. By creating a one stop shop for recreational and company league softball we now have twice the size of what our operation was in the beginning. Word of mouth has always been are best reference.
Mitchell, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
So Cal Adult Softball was started by Pete and Mitch McNamara in 2012. Since then we have offered softball leagues at various locations year around. Part of scaling up was going from running two seasons a year to now four seasons! The Spring and Fall Leagues are between 12-14 week seasons depending on location and our Winter and Summer Leagues are 8 weeks. Some of the challenges with running all these leagues is teams sometime overlap seasons and schedules may have to be adjusted. We always try to be as flexible as possible with teams. What sets So Cal Adult Softball apart from others is we have the ability to create leagues for all different levels of players. With that comes more tasks and time management but in the end it has brought us more business.
Can you talk to us about how your side-hustle turned into something more.
When we first started So Cal Adult Softball it was a side hustle for me preparing fields and umpiring. I first started preparing the field when I was 12 years old and I still do today. I also still umpire. Being out there doing these things myself reminds me that I still have to hustle to make the business run. Now its my main hustle.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
The best source of new clients for So Cal Adult Softball has always been word of mouth. Talking to people face to face and being out there at the fields has always brought us more new players and teams every season. Social media is not my thing but I would definitely hire someone to do it for me!
