We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Mitchell Ford. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Mitchell below.
Mitchell, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
For me, the biggest risk I’ve taken was packing up and moving to Fort Worth back in 2021 to pursue my music career. I got the idea late one night in my home at the time in Canyon, TX and started making moves on the plan the following day. I didn’t know many people in the FW area, and I knew it would be a huge adjustment, but I knew it was a move I was ready to make. I put a timeline on the move and started getting my things together, or else I would have probably talked myself out and stayed where I was comfortable. Moral of this story for me, it was a great idea and I’m very happy with the choice I made back then. Fort Worth has been welcoming in the music community and just in day-to-day life as well. The moves that will be the best for you definitely won’t be the easiest, but they will pay great dividends in the end. So my advice on risk taking: make that move, try something new and chase your dreams. You’ll be glad you did!

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Just to set the scene about where I originally come from. I grew up in the small town of Wheeler, TX, population around 1,200, up in the Texas Panhandle. Farming/ranching and the oilfield were the two main industries in that area. It’s a place where everyone knows everyone and the town shut down by 9pm every night.
Now on to how I got into music! I picked up a guitar that my older brother had wanted to learn on when I was in 7th grade. He had taken some guitar lessons, but it eventually fizzled out and the guitar was just sitting in our house collecting dust. When I picked it up I had no clue what was about to happen, but I started teaching myself how to play and eventually figured out I could sing as well. Throughout the rest of my days in Wheeler, I really only played and sang in front of my family and close friends. When I got to college, we finally started a little band and I played my first paying gig at a bar called Leftwood’s in Amarillo. From that gig, it snowballed and we started playing almost every weekend around the area. It wasn’t until I moved to Fort Worth in 2021 that I finally took the leap and music became my sole career.(I have since got into real estate as well and I’m a realtor at GS Realty Team in Weatherford, but that’s a story for another time.)
I strive to keep my songwriting raw and real, and keep the listeners engaged with my storytelling. I want the listeners to really feel something when they listen to my set and make some sort of impact on them. Maybe it’s just to get away from “life” for a bit and listen to some songs, or maybe they can relate to one of my songs on a very personal level. Music is such a unique thing because it doesn’t have to be labeled to anything specific. Just enjoy it and let it move you however it does!

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding part of being an artist is simply seeing how much music can really impact someone’s day or life. I never know what people have going on in their lives when they happen to be at a show listening to my songs. It’s really cool to get to meet so many awesome people and hear stories about how they can relate to a song I just played in that set. It doesn’t even necessarily have to be one of my original songs, it can be a cover song too. I think music brings people together and you find common ground through it, so go support a local musician soon!

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
This is interesting because social media is something I am still currently learning about and seeing how to maximize my audience on different platforms. Social media is really cool because you can reach such a broad crowd all over the world, not just in your specific area. I’m finding that people just like to see your daily life, they want to feel like they know you on a personal level even if we’ve never met. I share videos of me singing but I also try to throw in my day-to-day life as well, such as being at the lake with friends or out on the golf course with a buddy. People seem to respond well to those “non music related” posts and I’ll continue trying to mix those in. Really, I think just being the genuine person you are in real life on social media as well is really important.
