We recently connected with Mitch CK and have shared our conversation below.
Mitch, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today One of the toughest things about progressing in your creative career is that there are almost always unexpected problems that come up – problems that you often can’t read about in advance, can’t prepare for, etc. Have you had such and experience and if so, can you tell us the story of one of those unexpected problems you’ve encountered?
Look, posting videos of yourself online for the world to see takes guts. Even those out there that don’t have large followings, but are still making content. It’s not easy to do, and I commend all that do it.
For me, all of that was fortunately made easier by my presentation skills and my ability to mentally compartmentalize my life.
Now unexpected for me during this process, was how many people I knew that actively rooted against me. They didn’t want me to grow on social media, and when I did, they would attempt to openly discredit the platform. This surprised me because many of these people were those that I had helped grow personally in their lives or professionally in their career.
But hey, hurt people hurt people.
When I started to really see growth on TikTok, I had a coworker who said, “It’s just really, really easy to grow on TikTok. It’s Instagram that is actually tough to grow on.”
And I took that personally. Instant motivation.
In response, I set aside time to focus on Instagram, and have since seen even bigger growth on Instagram than I have on TikTok.
There are constant unexpected obstacles and issues that come with any level of success. But it’s up to us to decide how we respond to it. I just focus on controlling what I can control, and not putting energy towards the things I can’t control.
I know that if I keep the main thing the main thing, and then move forward, that everything else will take care of itself.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Sure. I’m Mitch. Known as MitchCK.
I create short-form video content on social media. Like many that have begun to create videos on social, I started to grow during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Back then, short-form videos witnessed a surge in popularity. Individuals worldwide flocked to TikTok, seeking solace from the gloomy reality they faced each day.
It was early 2020 when I stumbled upon Scott D Henry’s intriguing video titled “Things White People Say” while glancing at a coworker’s phone. Curiosity piqued, I promptly downloaded TikTok, and began consuming content.
I was captivated by the overwhelming amount of videos being created. I was just a spectator at the time, but was amazed how the algorithm seemed to put relevant videos in front of me at a fairly consistent rate.
Soon, I started to see more and more Shower Thoughts and “Unanswerable” questions find their way onto my “For You Page.”
And the people just LOVED them.
I’d look through the comments, and see people everywhere saying things like:
“My mind is blown!”
“This will keep me up all night.”
“I need answers!”
That was the turning point. They wanted answers, and I had them.
I’ve always had a curious mind and an excellent memory. During my college days, I spent endless hours delving into Shower Thoughts questions on platforms like Reddit and various corners of the internet.
Why? Because I firmly believed that answers to these questions were there.
And guess what? They were.
And now, years after graduating from college, I saw an opportunity to use some of the seemingly useless information I had gathered.
So I began to “duet” and “stitch” (TikTok terms) these creators with questions and gave them the answers they were looking for.
Now, not everyone wants answers. And that’s okay. But there was a large number who did.
Just like that, a community was born.
This community has now expanded to include over 500,000 people on Instagram and over 400,000 on TikTok.
The community is smaller on YouTube, Facebook, and Twitch, but still present.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
You bring things nobody else can.
That’s a phrase I share often. You ever seen the movie, Encanto? If you haven’t, stop reading and go watch it.
It tells the meaningful story of a young girl (Mirabel) and her journey to understand that despite the fact that she doesn’t have a magical gift, that because of who she is, her talents are just as irreplaceable.
The same rings true in life.
Each of us is blessed with a combination of charisma, talents, skills, empathy, etc that makes us completely unique. The secret sauce to growing on any social media platform is to find the ways that you can add value, and then do so in the way that only you can.
So my advice would be to find the ways that you are uniquely positioned to add value to others, and then do that at scale on social media.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Helping people.
The phrase people know me by is “Hope that helps.” I say this at the end of nearly every video I post.
Whether it is making them laugh or helping them learn, I just want to make people happy.
And when I get comments and messages from people saying that I made their day better, helped them learn something new, or helped them get through a tough time, there is not many better feelings in the world.
You can’t put a price on improving the lives of others.
