Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Misty Jayne Harmon. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Misty Jayne, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
Being a seasoned Hairstylist since 2003, I was ready to step into a new roll of helping other stylist’s thrive. Not just in their business but in their lives. I just wasn’t sure on how I would best be of service to the industry.
Backtrack to 2015, I myself was a busy stylist who never felt like she could get ahead, was drowning in debt and had a dream of moving into a more family friendly neighborhood. That’s 12 years of a career that never felt financially fulfilling despite my full clientele. So In 2016 I turned my whole life around by choosing to teach myself the foundations of financial literacy and by 2018 I had paid off $48,000 in debt, bought my dream house and went out on my own as an independent stylist.
So in 2019, When I told my money story to an educator in the industry, She asked me to come and teach a class about how I did it in her salon. I sold out the class and realized that day that the foundations of financial literacy was not only not taught AT ALL… it wasn’t taught to the hair industry in a a way that stylist’s (self proclaimed “not numbers people”) could understand or get excited about.
That was the day I found my direction. 2020 was the year I went all in on spreading my message, learning how to coach and supporting stylists in learning how to “get their financial shit together” as I like to say.
There is so much money to made in this amazing industry but if stylists don’t know what to do with it when they get it home… what is the point. I quickly learned that it’s about so much more than money. There is a deeper reason to overspending and avoiding your bank account, so I dove into life coaching to better support my clients. There are hundreds of people teach stylists how to do techniques, marketing and how to make money but NO ONE was teaching them what to do with it when they brought it home. So I’m here to fill that gap.
I talk about financial literacy in an easy to consume, one step at a time, you can still spend on the things you love, kind of way that speaks to the hairstylists “i do what i want” mind.
Helping the industry look at managing their finances in a way that feels good to them is EVERYTHING to me cause I know what it feels like to gain financial confidence. It can be completely life changing for those who are ready for it.

Misty Jayne, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Misty Jayne! I got into the hair industry cause I hated high school and I wanted to get out of class. It was a Vocational option and I took it! 21 years later and my passion to lift this industry is STRONG. I am now a Money & Life Coach for hairstylists, a speaker as well as the host of The Starting Messy Podcast where I bring real, raw conversation from leaders in the hair industry to light.
Conversations are my super power!! I strive to be a safe place for not only my coaching clients but anyone. Connecting with people is the greatest gift this career has given me.
If you’re looking for perfectly curated… I’m not for you! I embrace my perfectly imperfect self and will remain a life long learner. I take my personal growth real serious cause I have come a hell of a long way and I love to share my journey with others.

What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Podcasting!! Between my podcast and being a guest on others… I shine when it comes to conversation. Most of my 1:1 clients come from hearing me on a podcast. There is something about getting to know me and the energy I bring that seems to pull people in (or repel the wrong ones) and i’m ok with that!

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I’m no stranger to pivoting.
I never wanted to be a business owner to be honest. It’s crazy to say that now considering I don’t think I could ever work for someone again.
I thought I wasn’t capable, that I wasn’t smart enough to go out on my own in any capacity. So I spend 14 years in salons working for someone else. After I got my financial shit together in 2018 something changed in me. Going through that process showed me that I had the discipline to make anything I wanted in my life a reality. So I went all in on opening my own salon suite and it was hella successful.
It catapulted my confidence even more when I realized I was capable of creating systems, holding solid boundaries and making my salon clients feel seen and heard.
When I decided to go all in on coaching I pivoted again! It was 2020 my son was starting Kindergarten virtually (that wasn’t fun) so I walked away from my salon business to go all in on this coaching business. It was one of the hardest things I had ever done.
Worth it!
