We recently connected with Misty Banchero and have shared our conversation below.
Misty, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you tell us the backstory behind how you came up with the idea?
I came up with the idea of @Seattlebutcherswife one day while helping my family business start up their social media story telling on Instagram. I convinced my husband to start sharing about the 3rd generation family meat business. In that I discovered so many delicious foods when I started to research hashtags such as #meat and #bbq. I was quickly drawn into the challenge of learning to grill these beautiful foods on my own. Having access to meat like I do being a butcher’s wife made this an easy adventure to begin. I watched videos, read articles and used cookbooks and the internet to begin the learning process. I was inspired and felt the connection on social media with the #BBQfamily so much so that I ended up making this a full time career.
Misty, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Our family owns a USDA meat processing facility in Seattle, WA. I got into the BBQ/Cooking social media industry by self teaching grilling and smoking skills. I have had the opportunity to use different grills, try so many brands of sauces and rubs and grilling tools. I share feedback with my audience, I spend time sharing tips or tricks I have learned. I inspire people to get started smoking and grilling meats and beyond. Mouth watering recipes can be found on my social media pages that make people hungry or want to learn how to cook for themselves.
What sets me apart is probably the fact that I am a woman, obsessed with BBQ, living in the city in Seattle. Washington state is not famous for our BBQ but that doesn’t mean that it can’t be cooked and found here. Being married to a 3rd generation butcher adds value to my audience as I explore unique an uncommon meat cuts to smoke and grill. One of the things that makes me so proud is to hear feedback on recipes that I shared that really wowed the crowd when someone else tried them. I want people to know that I love to inspire others to get out and grill no matter what season. I love influencing my female audience to get out of their comfort zone and to start to spend time on the grill. It really makes my day to get a DM from a woman sharing how she nudged her husband over and cooked him dinner on the grill, or that they perfected a beautiful grilled or smoked steak because of a video or chat we had.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
My audience on social media was built by keeping content real and authentic to me as a person and my brand. It was only 4 years ago that I learned to grill. I wasn’t even great at cooking at home before that. Bring your audience with you on the learning journey authentically and you will see growth. Today people want less filter, fewer ads, and more real stories. If you are just getting started no matter what realm you are in, support is crucial. When you find your niche you’ll see that you can leverage each other to grow. Showing support for your friends goes a long way, in turn they support you and your content and that really helps the reach of your posts when it is authentic support. Consistency is key, whatever you do try to be consistent so that people know they can rely on you as a source of information or entertainment. And lastly show your face. Viewers want to see and know the human behind the pics and videos. Put yourself out there, if you do your audience will surround you with support.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
One goal I have is to encourage and inspire women in all aspects of my life. As a mother of daughters this hits home for me. In previous careers I have always worked hard to be a roll model for young women. Great work ethic, resilience, drive for results and prioritizing family. Being a content creator and business owner allows me to reach a new audience. And while my followers are mostly middle age men who love meat and BBQ I am still able to impact many women who follow my content. I have a personal mission to inspire and teach more ladies to get out and have the confidence to cook on any grill/smoker.
