We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Missy Bonet a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Missy , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
June 2022: The month I will always remember for the rest of my life. My grandmother, my best friend, unexpectedly passed away. My world was shattered and the world kept throwing me thunderstorms at each pass. Despite what my friends, family and the world may say, I walked away from a six-figure client, closed my business and said good-bye to several relationships to focus on my mental health. I took the risk and leap of faith that I would return back on my feet stronger, better and more empowered to be more conscious of the little time we have left.
Fast forward to August 2023: I couldn’t be happier. The risk of walking away from my financial security and relationships that I thought I needed was the best decision for me. I was able to discover my true purpose and happiness that isn’t driven by the need for money to pay bills. I was able to cherish and value relationships that are meaningful and serve a purpose. I found myself. While I am still discovering what I want my next financial chapter to be, I am at peace – traveling the world with my children and family; learning to love myself again; and building memories.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I created a blog platform over ten years ago to share my experiences of stepping out to become a freelance business owner. Freelancing back then was a thing, but it was an unspoken thing. No one told the behind-the-scenes struggles of being a freelancer/entrepreneur. I created a blog community that invited other like-minded people to share their truths of running a business. As my journey progressed so did my blog. Now, my current blog, a Curvy Mom helps women turn their passion into profit while navigating life in between. I have also expanded my company to include business services for individuals who need a personal touch on helping them to succeed in their business dreams and goals.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy for growing your clientele is to identify your problem that you are solving and the solution you are offering. Next, create the ideal customer for who would need this solution. Then you want to build your creditability by speaking on this solution. You can do this through social media, blogs, media, etc. The goal here is to get people to respect your opinion and value your insight on your solution. By doing this you will begin to build your community of loyal members who are interested in you and your product/service that is offered by your business.
Have you ever had to pivot?
I am at a time currently where I would like to pivot my business from strictly business related and services and get back to creative writing books and other digital products. While I still want to educate my community of women who are balancing motherhood, life, business, careers, etc.; I want to do it in a more creative and entertaining way without the restrictions of the business fundamentals and lingo.
