Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Missy Adiego. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Missy, thanks for joining us today. Owning a business isn’t always glamorous and so most business owners we’ve connected with have shared that on tough days they sometimes wonder what it would have been like to have just had a regular job instead of all the responsibility of running a business. Have you ever felt that way?
This question hits so close to home. Since my business is just over one year old, I’ve had the chance to try my hand at other careers, some I loved more than others. For me design was a passion that turned into a career. There are positives and negatives of your own business but the positives far out way the negatives. Starting out is a struggle as with any business, building from the ground up takes hard work and hustle. I have to admit there has been a few days that you question is it worth it? Having a 9-5 leaving your problems at the door seems easy. In the end if you can grind through the hard days it all works out and you never look back.

Missy, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Welcome. I am Missy, the founder and lead stylist of The Upstated Home. The goal is to create a truly authentic home to fit each clients’ personal design style within their budget. Your home is your brand and should reflect who you are. I am originally from upstate New York where I developed a passion for equestrian design and love for traditional east coast homes. Currently I am residing on a Northern California farm, I have curated a design style combining east coast traditional and west coast casual.
“You can have a home that is beautiful and lived in. It is about selecting the correct finishes and designing realistically for your lifestyle”
I believe every home should have character, creating a timeless, classic home that will last years to come.
A little backstory. I grew up in New York. Upstate (amish and chicken wings). Equestrian girl, who is slightly obsessed with horses (warmbloods and hunter/jumpers are my thing). Past creamery owner (yes we used to be ice cream makers and bottle sheep milk) Currently living in Cali, I am a rural girl at heart. Married for almost 18 years to a pretty awesome guy who supports any idea and can fix/ build anything. Girl mom to three beautiful ladies. They are my biggest day to day job. (raising well rounded kids to become successful adults is not a joke) I am lucky enough to stay home and be with them everyday and cherish these crazy years. I have always loved design and beautiful homes. When I turned 40 as Oprah would say had I had a Aha moment. Life is short, I needed to do what I wanted and LOVED.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
When I first started The Upstated Home, I was offering multiple packages including real estate staging. I underestimated the amount of work that moving furniture took. I started getting more design clients and knew I couldn’t do my best at both. I decided to stop home staging and focus solely on interior design and design management. The pivot was a blessing, I realized sometimes doing less can be better vs being a yes person and stretching yourself thin.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Social Media now is a beast. You have to evolve daily to keep up with the trends. It can absolutely be overwhelming to most. I have some experience in business and self marketing so that has helped immensely. I think if you stay true to yourself and your brand you will grow naturally. There will be times when you feel like you are selling yourself or over sharing, but let those who you love and support follow, those who are not true followers will fall off and that is ok. Be consistent, be conscious of your brand and make sure you are using all your available platforms.
