Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Missi Regalado. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Missi, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Are you happier as a business owner? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job?
I believe every business owner has had this thought at least once. Owning a business is definitely a rollercoaster of emotions that you’re really never prepared for. If you made a list between owning a business and working a regular job both have pros & cons, it just depends which pros are worth more. I personally have had this discussion with myself a few more times than I have liked to, mostly when things have got a little stressful. When being a business owner there’s no such thing as clocking in & out, you truly work 24/7, you work endlessly! You are Artist, Manager, HR, Receptionist, Marketing, CEO, etc.. you’re definitely getting underpaid. Most of the time you’re adding things to your “To Do” list before you’re even half way done with what you started.
There has been times where I felt like I was running on 10%. I start working as soon as i wake up, reading emails while brushing my teeth, adding a business idea to my notes while in the middle of a shower, replying to clients while getting dressed, posting on social media while eating breakfast. Then, getting to work a bit early to set up and prepare for the day, start doing brows, extensions, facials, lash lifts, more brows and more lashes. By the time lunch comes which I have most likely given some of my lunch time to my last client Im probably replying to more messages while eating, then off to do more brows. Weekly tasks consist of doing inventory, submitting orders, checking in with next weeks new clients, follow ups, etc. If I’m lucky I’m probably taking a continue education course as well.
So, there has definitely been times where I’ve sat there thinking to myself “what if…” would it be easier to just go into a job where I just clock in & clock out? I wouldn’t have to worry about anything else other than what im having for dinner. Sometimes that one thought sounds tempting but at the end when I ask myself if I would be happier, probably not. Yes I get tired and sometimes feel overworked but never unhappy and I wouldn’t give that up. I love and am very proud of what I have built with my own hands, I’ve added my touch and creativity to my business, it represents me and who I am, I’ve set standards that are extremely important to me. For the past 5 years there hasn’t been one single day where I’ve dreaded going into work or felt unhappy. The reward is definitely worth the go, go, go.
Missi, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Hi there! My name is Missi, a Texas girl that moved to Colorado 8 years ago, Im 4th child from a family of 12. I love all topics of beauty, from clothes to makeup. I am very passionate of my job and my work! I love my clients as much as I love my job. When I’m not at the studio with my clients I’m probably home cuddling with my puppy Roxie or at the plant store. My journey as an Esthetician started in 2016, I received a scholarship from Emily Griffith which I will forever be grateful for, to graduating and getting my foot in the industry in 2017. Shortly after I started GlamBar Studio in 2018 and here I am now, submitting my 2nd interview.
Services that I have brought into the studio and love doing are Lash Extension, Lash Lifts, Custom Facials, Dermaplaning, Chemical Peels, Eyebrow Shaping & Tinting, Eyebrow Lamination and Permanent Makeup. Everyday I get to do a little of everything but I will always be doing brows!
The #1 question I always get asked is “what is your favorite services?”. I’ve never been able to answer that question because it’s like asking me what’s my favorite pair of shoes. I will say that the most rewarding service is brows, by far! Especially new clients that say nobody has ever been able to give them a good shape, my brain automatically goes to CHALLENGE ACCEPTED! Client’s reaction afterwards is so rewarding and heart warming, to make them happy truly makes me happy. Ive had people thank me like if I gave them my winning lottery ticket, to people staring in the mirror in disbelief. Definitely the best part of my job is to see those ear to ear nonstop smiles. I’ve made someones day, maybe even week.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Social media…. personally my biggest struggle sometimes. Social media has definitely changed, before it was just about posting, now it’s about reels, algorithms, trends, hashtags, etc. Ive had battles with social media, from wanting to post twice a day to wanting to delete my page. The thing that I have learned about it is first, don’t stress over it. Post when you have time, you don’t have to set alarms for posting reminders. You do have to be consistent, people like to stay engaged, it’s like watching a series but they only show an episode once a month. So post once a day and show yourself, people want to know who’s behind the account. They want to put a face to a brand and know about you not just your business. Have fun, be you and add your special touch to your page. Lastly be patient and don’t get discouraged, Rome wasn’t built in a day.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Most of my new clients are word of mouth. Sometimes all it takes is a brow appointment and then a night out with friends. My clients are walking advertisements so I make sure they’re always stocked up with business cards, have my social media or my number on speed dial. I also give my clients a little reward as well, $10 off for every person they refer. They love it! I too am a walking advertisement, any compliment or simple smile I simple just ask if I can give them a business card so never shy away from a random conversation. Everyone you come across can be a potential client.
