Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Miss Monday. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Miss thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
As a child, my passion for music was evident from the very beginning. At the tender age of 4, my parents gifted me a toy drum kit, and I cherished it so much that it became my earliest sign of a deep connection with music. Additionally, I embarked on piano lessons at the age of 12, further nurturing my musical interests. However, it wasn’t until I turned 16 and became a DJ at my high school radio station that I felt a profound alignment with my true calling.
During my time at WEJY, our high school radio station, I hosted my own show for two years. Additionally, I took on the role of a play-by-play commentator for the boys’ basketball team, receiving high praise from the local community for my contributions. This experience solidified my love for broadcasting and music.
I pursued my passion by earning a degree in broadcast, telecommunication, and film. Throughout my college years, I continued to host my radio show, honing my skills and expanding my knowledge of house and techno music. It was during this time that I began my journey as an electronic music DJ, a career that has now spanned over 25 years.
Miss , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
For those unfamiliar with my background, in addition to the details shared in the previous response, my musical journey was profoundly influenced by the vibrant scenes of Detroit and Chicago. Growing up in Michigan, I had the incredible opportunity to immerse myself in the Detroit techno and Chicago house movements during the 1990s, witnessing firsthand the transformative power of the music emerging from these cities. Given the relatively short distance between Detroit and Chicago, it became a regular occurrence for me to traverse between the two, as well as venture to Toronto, which also boasted an impressive music scene during that era.
The music and warehouse parties I experienced during those years were truly life-changing and have continued to shape my artistic inspiration to this very day. Legendary artists such as John Acquaviva, Heather, Derek May, Stacy Pullen, Derrick Carter, and numerous others from Detroit and Chicago served as my mentors, igniting the creative spark that still influences my DJ style today.
During my early days in high school radio, prior to discovering the rich sources of house and techno music, I began by playing open format. This versatile foundation has allowed me to secure bookings spanning various genres, as my extensive experience extends beyond just house and techno. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of performing at celebrity events for Jessica Simpson, Kelly Osbourne, and The Love International Film Festival, to name a few. I attribute my seasoned expertise as the primary factor that enables me to bring a diverse and multifaceted artistic perspective to the table today.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
The most significant lesson I’ve had to reevaluate and unlearn is allowing age and the process of aging to hinder my pursuit of my deepest passions in life. There was a period when I redirected my creative energy towards the fashion industry for approximately eight years. I did so because I harbored concerns that the music industry might not be welcoming to an older female artist. During this time, I still accepted occasional gig opportunities but significantly reduced my involvement in music. Then, unexpectedly, I began receiving numerous invitations to perform once more. Before I knew it, I was fully immersed in regular gigging, and this momentum has persisted ever since, with only a brief pause during the pandemic, during which I continued to play at various desert and underground parties.
I’ve made the conscious decision to release the fear of aging and embrace the commitment to continue doing what I love. What’s truly remarkable is that I’ve discovered, through interactions with many people, that I serve as a source of inspiration to them and have even played a transformative role in their lives. If there’s one thing that makes this journey undeniably worthwhile, it’s the profound impact I’ve had on others and the meaningful connections forged through my passion.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
A goal and mission of mine that remains unfulfilled is mastering the art of music production. While I’ve taken tentative steps in this direction, my plan for 2024 involves taking more significant strides, which is why I am relocating from Los Angeles to Las Vegas where I can have a larger space to create an environment conducive to achieving this goal.
