We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Miss Marshn. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Miss Marshn below.
Miss Marshn, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
At the beginning of 2023 I set out on a journey to heal and transform myself. Mid-way through 2023 a series of events and decisions turned my world as I had known it for nearly a decade completely upside down. As a response to all of the chaos, grief, and uncertainty, I remembered that I could cope by pouring myself into my paintings. For all of the words I couldn’t seem to find or was too afraid to express at the time, I channeled into visual concepts and did my best to convey the feelings with color, texture, and contrast. Naturally, my studies in metaphysics and psychedelic experiences began to inspire and blend with my work. I became enamored with the idea of expressing my inner world through the lens of each chakra center and finding a way to express my own imbalances or dualities within each space. The first painting I completed I titled “Fractured” to represent the state of my wellbeing. Little did I consciously know, this would begin a collection of paintings that would represent the real time transformation of finding all of my pieces and putting myself back together again. Both the past year of my life and this collection of paintings have been my most meaningful project thus far and when they are completed I greatly hope to share them and their stories wherever they resonate best.

Miss Marshn, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Mentored in my younger years by creative parents, siblings, friends, music and the sub/counter cultures of goth, punk, hiphop and youth-crew hardcore; I’ve been practicing and expanding my craft for over 20 years as a multi-disciplined artist. Enthralled by metaphysics, romance, vintage glamour, otherworldly beings and a plethora of other ‘strange’ interests while drawing inspiration, structure, and style from my roots in graffiti and tattooing – my aim is to create pieces and experiences that push the boundaries of the viewers imagination and comfort zone. To ignite passion, curiosity, creativity, unity and a sense of self sovereignty through blending and bridging gaps between worlds, labels, cultures, genres, beliefs and stereotypes. To collaborate with and nurture collectives that provide resources and mentorship to the next generation of artists and creatives.
My work has taken on many forms and directions over the years including sign and window painting, logo design, album artwork, tattoo flash, murals, custom painted clothing/accessories/housewares and an extensive body of multi-medium paintings/drawings.
‘Miss Marshn’ is my latest project meant to encompass, express and celebrate the alienation and enlightenment myself and others have experienced embracing our multi-dimensionality

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
Spending a decade in two heavily male dominated paths/communities posed a lot of complicated lessons for me as a young woman. I felt a stern expectation to prove myself constantly and to excel beyond just being “good for a woman”. At first that mindset pushed me to create at the highest level I thought I was capable of. Over time, the pressure that once motivated me began to stifle my creativity and wellbeing as I was actively suppressing parts of myself that seemed too “weak” “vulnerable” or “frilly” to attempt to gain respect from my peers. The pressure then became a force that shattered my entire perception of myself sending me into deep depression and resentment for all that I once loved. I am still healing and unlearning these habits of compartmentalization and masking but embracing and giving voice to all parts of myself has been the scariest and most fruitful, beautiful journey I’ve been on yet

Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
The Tao of Wu by RZA and The Evolution of a Cro-Magnon by John Joseph are two incredible books that greatly impacted my mindset and the trajectory of my life. Until The Wheels Fall Off, the Bones Brigade Autobiography and Filmage: The Story of Descendents/All are a few documentaries that really touched my heart and sparked deep, lasting inspiration and resonance.
All of these expressions bear the running themes of community, ingenuity, passion, dedication and resilience which are virtues I hold near and dear. As well as emphasize that it doesn’t matter so much where, who, or what circumstances you come from as much as what you intend to create and do with them
