Miss, appreciate you joining us today. What were some of the most unexpected problems you’ve faced in your business and how did you resolve those issues?
The most unexpected problem I faced with my business involved trademarks. Someone knowingly copied my business name after I followed them on social media. They persisted to even get a logo very similar to mine and made one small change to the name by adding one extra letter. I immediately started doing research on how to trademark my name. It seemed pretty simple at first, but I was in a rush. I was more concerned about letting the public know that it was my name first and missed out essential information. However, I still filed the name with US Trademark office. It took almost a year just to receive a denial letter. I had no idea what I did wrong, it seemed like I had wasted my money on something I thought was so simple. I began doing more in-debt research the second time. I hired a trademark company to do the filing for me this and I also filed with a new name. The process is still ongoing to this day and I have yet to receive my trademark. I am glad that I have lawyers working with me on this and will soon have my official trademark. Overall these issues helped me learn to work through problems with patience and always do my due diligence when researching thoroughly.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
After I graduated college I worked as a scientist. I thought this was my passion, but as I got into the routine of doing the same thing everyday I found that it was just something I was just good at. It didn’t make me happy and I felt like something was missing. I honestly couldn’t see myself doing lab work for the rest of my life. One day I wrote down in my journal all of my skills and the things I was passionate about. I found that the things that make me the happiest involve hair and beauty. I decided I wanted to start my own beauty brand and put my cosmetic chemistry skills to work. I quit my job and started working full time on my business.
After extensive research, combined educational experiences I created high end hair and beauty products for consumers to feel and look luxurious. Our mission at Haus of Dior is to bring beauty, grace, and exclusivity to everyone through our premium quality products. We are focused on offering each one of our customers a luxurious and exceptional experience with excellent, friendly, and professional customer support.
Haus of Dior solves problems for people who are looking for quality hair and beauty products. We cater to our audience’s specific needs and do extensive research in both hair and beauty. Those problems can range price points to specific ingredients and outcomes after using our products. One of our companies biggest accomplishments is creating our sleep care products. Our customers rave about signature bonnets staying on while they are sleeping. This is a huge issue black women have experienced for the past 20 years. They want to protect and maintain their hair at night without the fear of their bonnet/scarf coming off. We have found the solution with our bonnets and it really works!
Our branding skills at Haus of Dior are extravagant, specifically designed to market buyers who prefer luxury brands. We are expanding by keeping up with current trends, staying updated with scientific research, and introducing all audiences by offering products for mostly everyone. These are all the aspects that set us apart from other brands.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I was able to build an audience on social media for my business by converting my personal page into my business page. I had a great engagement during the time it was my personal page and thought it would make the most sense. After the switch I focused on having extravagant graphics as well quality post with myself using the products as well as other customers! The best advice I have for building social media audience is to consistently post, have a variety of content styles, and stay updated on trends/updates for each platform. Some people are more comfortable with one platform but to maximize engagement and sales its best to master as many as possible and not limit yourself.
Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?
While I was in college I would spend half of my checks and save the other half. I was able to save up twenty thousand dollars for a rainy day. Instead of using my funds for a rainy day I completely drained my savings and took the risk by having faith in my business. I was also able to get small loans from my parents as I was putting together the initial capital budget.
