We recently connected with Misha Fair and have shared our conversation below.
Misha, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Are you happy as a creative professional? Do you sometimes wonder what it would be like to work for someone else?
After years spent poorly balancing my boring 9-5 work routine with a music career, I finally took a leap of faith to focus on being an artist full time. Overnight I went from being a bankruptcy paralegal, who worked all day and stretched my nights to “fit in” my passions, to full time singer-songwriter, recording artist and performer. Initially, I still sought work as an artist developer, but I was working in music all the time. I did this “balancing act” for years until I decided that my moment had arrived. Once I committed to my artistry 100%, an overwhelming sense of happiness and fulfillment came over me. More specifically, my choice to pursue a career as a country artist placed me on a path less traveled and has given me a pretty passionate life outside of a traditional office. Very quickly, I felt my own individuality blossoming and developing for me and knew that not conforming to anyone else’s business structure was the best idea for my future. Unlike the 9-5 grind, I was now flexible and had freedom to make my own career choices and creative decisions. I remember my desk and a pretty bland daily routine, and I recall never really being able to relate to my work, coworkers or clients with any true meaning; so, I don’t miss it. Now, I see how powerful music is and how it resonates with people on a deep, emotional level and that makes me happiest of all.
Misha, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am an alternative country artist and singer-songwriter, originally from Atlanta, GA. Much of my sound is uniquely paired with elements of rock and blues. I write songs that feature classic vocals that pay homage to the country music’s roots with a gritty, soulful spin. In a genre that has been historically male-dominated, I’m shattering gender and race stereotypes and paving the way for black female country and americana artists to shine. My presence as a country songwriter and artist is bold and my empowering lyrics serve as a testament to the strength and diversity of talent that women bring to the country music landscape. I’m most proud of my commitment to empowering female perspectives in country music and that my songs put our experiences front and center, allowing fans to explore our complexities through a lens that tends to be underrepresented in the genre. I want potential fans to know that they can always count on authenticity, vulnerability and fresh energy in my records. Even as I push boundaries and experiment with new musical elements, listeners can always count on consistency in the quality of my music as I navigate through the beautiful ever-changing world of country music.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Personally, the most rewarding aspect of being an emerging country artist is being able to connect authentically with new audiences and making a meaningful impact on people through my music, I get to experience real joy over and over, every time a new person hears something I created, while building a supportive community of fans. There’s no better feeling!
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
“The Artist’s Way” by Julia Cameron has played a huge role in how I approach my professional and entrepreneurial endeavors. It’s not just about personal creativity. Julia’s words and activities encourage mindfulness and reflection, emphasize work-life balance and self-care, promote creativity as a business asset, and promote authenticity and purpose-driven entrepreneurship.
