We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Mish Khalil. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Mish below.
Alright, Mish thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I began my journey thanks to my unruly curiosity. Experience really is the greatest teacher, and I’ve always had a thirst for learning techniques in the studio. But as the old adage goes, success in anything doesn’t just come overnight. One of the biggest factors in my progress has been the mentorships I’ve had from some incredibly skilled and talented producers and engineers. Having that support system can expedite your experience level and plant a confidence thats pretty essential for navigating through your career.
A massive challenge a lot of us face, for example, is the amount of information available online. It can be difficult to decipher what’s really valuable to you. Its times like those where having that network of talent and experience to rely on becomes a pretty invaluable resource.

Mish, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Mish Khalil, I’m an audio engineer and producer working in Southern California. My journey into the world of audio really began with a love for music that has been with me for as long as I can remember. As a teenager, I would spend countless hours experimenting with records, trying to capture the sounds in my head and bring them to life. That craving led me to working with independent record labels and collaborating with artists in studios across Los Angeles.
Today I offer a range of services, including audio production, recording, mixing, and mastering. I primarily work with Hip-Hop, R&B, Electronic and Alternative music, but no matter what I’m handed my goal is always to do everything I can to help realize the vision of the artist or client. Every project is unique, so I think it’s pretty critical to make that effort and take the time to sit, listen and understand the goal to really cement that synergy.
The work I’m most proud of definitely has to be the projects I’ve done, and continue to do, with the band Graphic Tease and one of my favorite lyricists, Negus Gold Phoenix. I’ve been working closely with both on their upcoming projects respectively, and it’s honestly been an incredible honor to be a part of.
I believe that great audio production is about more than just a technical skillset. It’s really about understanding and enhancing the emotional impact of the music. I’m constantly trying to innovate and stay ahead of the curve, but my primary focus is, and always will be, doing my best to help an artist achieve their vision. At the end of the day, it’s really just a passion for music and an itch to bring a creative vision to life.

Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
Two books that have majorly impacted my thinking are How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie and Oversubscribed by Daniel Priestley.
How To Win Friends and Influence People has been pretty essential in shaping how I handle relationships, both professionally and in my personal life. Carnegie shares stories that convey how critical communication, empathy, and understanding another’s perspective can greatly influence an interaction with someone. In the audio world, collaboration and creative synergy are essential, and these skills have just been invaluable for me.
Oversubscribed by Daniel Priestley has also had a huge impact on how I think about entrepreneurship and running a business. The book gives great insight on creating demand and has helped me refine my approach to finding my clientele. He talks about understanding the unique value you likely have and making sure that what you offer is something that connects with people who may do business with you. Thats something that resonates heavily with how I try to differentiate myself from the pack.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being a creative is the fact that I can have a chance at a lasting legacy through my work. There’s something really special about creating a piece of art that can transcend a moment in time and continue to resonate with people for years after.
When working, I’m not just thinking about how things will translate today, but also how someone might stumble upon it in the future. It’s the idea that something I worked on could have that lasting impact that really excites me. For me it’s all about leaving a mark, no matter how small it might be.
