We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Mirna Ashaka a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Mirna, thanks for joining us today. Are you happier as a business owner? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job?
I am very happy, proud to be a business owner. At age of 21, I started my business from nothing and made it into something all with the help support from such a great community, family, friends, clients. I started my first business called Detroit Royal sweets doing desserts catering in 2020. Started with a 6ft cart started doing a crepe station, then started to expend with many more options. I am very lucky & honored to have build up this business & very thankful & grateful for all the clients that have supported me from day 1.i am also starting to launch my new business called Detroit Royal eats which is a food truck business. I am very excited to start this new opportunity for our community. I can’t wait to see what the future has hold for me & my passion is into foods, desserts, cafes. Anything that is related to food, enjoyable bite, events, I am very passionate about making my guests, clients happy & enjoy every bite. I am very grateful for building such a wonderful team.
If I had a regular job I wouldn’t be to where I’m at today. Overall I am very happy & thankful for my businesses & to be an owner operator.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I Mirna Ashaka, I am the founder & CEO of DETROIT ROYAL SWEETS. I started this catering business when I was 21 years old. I learned this business from my brother Martin. He has a bakery/sweet shop in San Diego ca. I am so proud of myself to where I’m at today, serving such a great community. Our brand keeps expanding, I love being part of every special moments that my clients celebrate & hire my company to be part of.

We’d love to hear the story of how you turned a side-hustle into a something much bigger.
I am very inspired by this business. I started this business as a side hustle & turned it into a full time business. I am truly Blessed & thankful for all my clients for trusting me, for hiring me to be part of every special event. The main key milestone was dedicating to what Clients ask for & providing them with delicious desserts.my goal is to keep on growing more and more connections in this industry, community to make everyone happy & satisfied.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
In this market, reputation and a word of mouth is the key of growing a business. My goal is always to be honest & good to my clients and that’s how I grow my business more & more. We have done so many weddings, then the kids baptisms it’s all about the reputation. We also have done so many cooperate events repeatedly also because of our reputation.
