We were lucky to catch up with Miriam Kruishoop recently and have shared our conversation below.
Miriam, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
As an artist my intention is to make sure all my projects are meaningful. At least to me. Earlier in my career projects were meaningful because they were milestones. The first time I won an award or worked with a well-known actor. But of course it’s amazing when you find your voice and know that you want to talk about real issues that resonate with people. It was also an amazing feeling to work with people who are fully behind you and who want to support you in any way to visualize your idea. My most meaningful projects so far have been: Vive Elle (feature film) Living in America (solo show) and Greencard Warriors (feature film).
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
‘m a storyteller. I write, direct and I’m a visual artist. I use multiple disciplines to give form to my ideas. That can be a light installation, a film, a sculpture, a painting. As a kid I was obsessed with movies and watched several a day. I always knew I was going into visual arts. So after high school I went to the Gerrit Rietveld Art Academy in Amsterdam. I’m the most proud of being able to evoke emotions in other people. It’s definitely an incredible feeling when you see your film on the big screen in a theatre for the first time. It was interesting to watch the audience and see how they respond to your work. That was very powerful and rewarding.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
To offer people a different point of view and perspective. Trying to move and engage people. Being able to build bridges between different perspectives.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
To tell meaningful stories. Have something to say.
Use your voice.
Never stay silent.
