Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Miriam Bennett. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Miriam thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
All my life, I’ve been intrigued by music. The beautiful melodies; the different patterns have always resonated with me. When I was younger, I always went about singing random things and coming up with little tunes on the piano. It was like my dream escape. When I was five years old, my family had the opportunity to travel to Ireland, My life changed during our tour of the Bunratty Castle in County Clare. When I first set foot in the castle, it was as if I had stepped into a fairytale. Nestled among the stone walls, the stained windows, and the historic reenactors was a lady playing music in the middle of the room. Having never seen a harp before, I couldn’t identify what she was playing, but my eyes were glued to her instrument, I couldn’t look away. The long strings extended from the bottom to the top and I could see them vibrate when she plucked them. I asked my mom about the instrument and she informed me that it was a harp. I knew at once that I wanted to learn how to make music on a harp. I begged my mom for a harp but she said there were no harpists in our home town and that it just wasn’t possible to do so.
After we returned home, I started piano lessons, but continued to ask for a harp daily. My parents enrolled me in violin lessons, then voice lessons and even in the theater trying to appease me, but I still asked for a harp. My dream of learning the harp finally became a reality on Christmas morning of 2020, Now, five years later, I hope to inspire other young children to follow their dreams and maybe even learn the harp too!

Miriam, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Miriam and I love music. I am 14 years old and play the piano, the violin and the harp. I play for events and weddings and share harp music weekly on my YouTube channel, “Miriam’s Music Room.” You can also see me explore many other instruments on Instagram. I enjoy singing in a choir and playing in an orchestra too. Basically anywhere I can create music is where I want to be. Music is a wonderful way to connect with others. I hope to spread joy through my music. My motto is “#SpreadSomeJoy.”
I truly love arranging and composing music. So many times I’ve heard that a certain piece is impossible to play on a lever harp and I wonder why? I have discovered that the lever harp is very capable of playing complex music. I love how diverse it can be. My harp can play Celtic tunes, the Beatles and even classical music by composers such as Debussy. I am proud to push the limits of what is possible.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Music provides the perfect space for me to explore. It is a safe place to express my creativity. I also really enjoy seeing that happen with others. When I give people a chance to experience the harp, the light on their faces is so rewarding.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My goal is to spread joy with my music. I plan to continue to pursue my passion for music and share my journey with others. I hope that one day people won’t be so surprised by all the lever harp can do.
