We were lucky to catch up with Mirembe Doreen recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Mirembe, thanks for joining us today. Can you tell us the backstory behind how you came up with the idea?
I was born and raised in Uganda Kampala the capital city down in the slums where single mothers hustle everyday. Being raised by a single mother that life shaped me into hustler from an early since my childhood I had a dream of telling stories at the same I was yawning so much to help those in need the same people used to help my mother. It wasn’t a bed of roses but a hard a desire to create a story that can change someone’s life in the slum, something that would empower all single mothers the dream was big I started small by joining small film group learning acting and doing other activities as I wait to start my own. During that period I opened Community Based Organisation and started supporting mothers deep in the village and those in sleep it’s when I got an idea how my first short film called “Maama wange’ means “My mother” without any single money with support from my Boyfriend we started building the story at the same time doing our charity an opportunity came Reach A hand Uganda called submissions we I submitted and out of 500 applicants I was among the 10 who were to do their story we started from an initial idea to a triumphant moment of winning my first awardaward. It all started with a desire to raise awareness HIV A disease that affects millions of people worldwide and especially single mothers in slums.
I was inspired by the stories of individuals who have faced the challenges starting from me and my family because of the experience I was able to do my film and as I talk we have about 20 nominations and 10 awards both national and international. And I see myself doing other big project and supporting more women in my country

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
