We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Mircea Modreanu. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Mircea below.
Mircea, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. I’m sure there have been days where the challenges of being an artist or creative force you to think about what it would be like to just have a regular job. When’s the last time you felt that way? Did you have any insights from the experience?
I feel extraordinary as an artist, a creator of beauty, and this experience brings me profound personal fulfillment. I have always had a burning passion for exploring various art forms, whether vibrant paintings, fascinating sculptures, or thought-provoking installations. Each artistic discipline offers me a whole universe of possibilities and a freedom of expression that enriches my soul. This artistic freedom is a framework within which I can manifest my emotions, thoughts, and vision, as well as reflect on the world around me.
I have never seriously considered the prospect of working in a regular job because I do not like the idea of a fixed schedule, which constrains me and limits my creativity. I cherish every moment of having the freedom to take the necessary time to ponder the themes I want to explore and to create works that reflect my deepest artistic vision. I enjoy losing myself in my thoughts, letting myself be inspired by the nature around me, the people I meet, and the emotions I experience.
Often, in moments of deep meditation, I find myself exploring ideas about the form, color, and texture of each piece I create. It is a process that brings me joy but also sometimes unease. However, there are moments when, with a certain anxiety, I wonder if a traditional job might make my day-to-day existence easier. I have realized that, in difficult times, a stable job might provide a certain financial security, an aspect that art does not always guarantee, particularly in the current context of Romania.
In Romania, artists face numerous challenges to survive, from a lack of funding for artistic projects to fierce competition in an ever-changing cultural environment. Even so, I must acknowledge that I deeply desire to remain true to my artistic vision and continue to create without the constraints typical of a stable work schedule. However, as I think about my life and the practical needs of existence, I can feel, at times, the pressure of a traditional job bearing down on me.
That being said, I think a regular job could bring a monotony that I don’t believe I can tolerate. I love the diversity and spontaneity of artistic creation, and I wouldn’t want to give up these fundamental aspects of my existence. Each day as an artist is a new opportunity to explore, to experiment, and discover new ways to express my vision, which fills my heart with enthusiasm and curiosity.
Despite the difficulties and challenges, I choose to follow my dream and continue on this artistic path, always looking for ways to express my creativity and share my vision with the world. Art is what defines me, what elevates me, and giving it up for a normal life is not something I can imagine. Therefore, I will strive to find a balance between the practical realities of life and my artistic passion, ensuring that I can continue to create and inspire, even in the face of adversity.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I was born in 1989 in a small mining town in Romania, a modest yet historically rich area. From a young age, I was drawn to art, spending countless hours drawing and painting. This passion stayed with me throughout my life. When the time came to continue my education, I chose to attend art school, confident that this was the path I wanted to follow.
After graduating, I faced a frustrating reality: at that time in Romania, there were very few opportunities for young artists to exhibit their work. Art galleries or exhibition spaces were scarce, and many emerging artists, like myself, struggled to find a place to showcase their creations. Motivated by the desire to change this situation and create a platform for young creators, I decided to open my own exhibition space. This is how E T A J artist-run space was born, a unique place that I set up in my apartment.
Since 2018, I have managed to organize over 200 events and exhibitions, all to promote emerging art and give a voice to new talents in the field. As an artist, I enjoy exploring a wide range of visual techniques: from painting and mural art to sculpture, photography, video, installation, and performance. I love experimenting and constantly challenging my artistic boundaries, always seeking new ways to express my creative vision.
I am always open to collaborations and commissions, and eager to connect with people who love and appreciate art. With every project I initiate, my goal is to make a meaningful contribution to the art community in Romania and help foster an environment where creativity is celebrated and encouraged.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me, as an artist, the most satisfying moment is when I complete a work and it turns out exactly as I had envisioned. Seeing my ideas and vision come to life and materialize into something tangible is deeply fulfilling. However, beyond this personal satisfaction, what brings me even greater joy is the reaction of the audience. When my work manages to evoke emotions, create a connection, or provide a meaningful experience for those who view it, I feel that my artistic mission has truly been accomplished. This dual satisfaction—both personal and from the audience—is what motivates me to continue creating and exploring new ways of artistic expression.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I can say that throughout my artistic journey so far, my resilience has been largely fueled by my stubbornness. This stubbornness has been the driving force that kept me going, even in the most difficult moments. Without it, I believe I would have given up long ago, especially considering the people who have come and gone, those who were only briefly by my side, and others who disappointed or even betrayed me. These experiences, though painful, have made me realize just how crucial it is to remain true to my passion.
My stubbornness is not just about resisting hardships, but also about a deep commitment to my art. Even when faced with obstacles, I refuse to give up because I love what I do. The art world can be unpredictable and, at times, ungrateful, but with determination, I hold on tightly and won’t allow myself to be defeated. Every challenge has strengthened me, and every setback has made me even more determined to stay on my path.
For me, art is not just a career, but an essential part of who I am. This deep connection is what drives me to keep going, no matter how tough things get. My stubbornness is, in fact, a form of perseverance and a belief that the path I’ve chosen is the right one. As long as I have this determination, I won’t let go, and I will continue to dedicate myself wholeheartedly to my field.
