We were lucky to catch up with Mirandia Coger recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Mirandia, thanks for joining us today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
I believe a change agent is someone who promotes positive change in organizations, industries, and life. As a change agent you should be honest, authentic, supportive and show compassion. From this, our mission at The Change Agency, LLC is to serve others, assist them with building out their vision and be the solution to problems.
I didn’t know I was a change agent at first. I was comfortable staying behind the scenes and doing just enough but obviously there were gifts inside of me I hadn’t tapped into yet. Throughout my life there were instances where I would see a problem before it would happen then God would give me a solution. For example, I am a motivator by nature, and I have the ability to sense friction/tension before it happens. I could tell at one job that the morale was about to shift so I gave my director at the time some suggestions to make sure that my coworkers felt appreciated. The atmosphere began to change in a more positive direction.
Another example is that people often feel comfortable talking to me, which usually means I get the complaints or peoples frustrations. So, I then turn that into an opportunity to find a solution to help everyone. I have come to realize that I can’t solve every problem or change every environment, but I can do my best.
When I started The Change Agency, LLC in 2022, I wasn’t sure what it would evolve into. I do believe that it will evolve into different sectors. As of right now, I’m focusing on the Virtual Assistant sector which allows me to help businesses with their administrative needs.
Mirandia, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I had the privilege of being born and raised in Richmond, VA. My time in Virginia came with great experiences and not so great memories, but most of all it showed me how strong I was. For the past 13 years, I worked in the childcare industry as a lead teacher, Director in Training, and Afternoon Supervisor. I enjoyed working with children but felt that it was more in me than being a childcare teacher. I’ve always known that I wanted to experience working in the Administration sector. When I received a job as an administrative assistant in 2021, it unlocked something inside of me.
At the beginning of January 2023, I took a 3-day masterclass about becoming a Virtual Assistant (VA). That class gave me the push I knew I needed. Prior to taking the class, I was a VA for a nonprofit for children in foster care, an administrative assistant for a local church and a nonprofit in GA. The skills I learned throughout the years and what I learned in the class has assisted me in my current position as an Administrative Assistant for a local nonprofit and even my business, The Change Agency, LLC.
Through my company The Change Agency LLC, I am providing Virtual Assistant Services and Grant Assistance. I help clients put structures in place, streamline services etc. In addition, I help small businesses and nonprofits secure funding for their business and projects.
What I am most proud of though is that I stepped into a career I wasn’t sure I was qualified for but took the necessary steps to embrace the fact that I am more than meets the eye. If I can give one piece of advice it would be “Do It Scared”. One the other side of fear is feeling proud of overcoming. There are days when I show up to a meeting with a client or work scared but after it is all said and done, I accomplished what I thought I couldn’t do.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Moving to Georgia was the moment I knew I had the strength to do more than I was doing.
I moved to Georgia in 2021 with no family, friends, or a job. Something in me just knew though it was time to leave North Carolina. Before my transition, my contract ended unexpectedly as a nanny and my lease was ending soon. During this chaotic time, I immediately felt this nudge to take a leap of faith and move. Being a Christian and having a heart for God requires so much faith.
On my first trip to Georgia all I had was a suitcase and faith. While I was traveling, I had stopped in South Carolina at a rest stop to take an interview for an administrative assistant position at a church. As I was making my way to my Airbnb in GA, the church van of the church I interviewed for rode passed me. Seeing that van was all I needed to know that God was up to something.
It wasn’t all peaches and cream because the Airbnb was a scam, money was already tight, and I didn’t know where I was going to stay. Thankfully I did have a cousin in the area that let me stay with her & her family. While there, I had applied for several jobs and kept getting no’s until I got the call back from the church. The position was part time, but it was exactly what I needed to give the push to step outside of my comfort zone. That was just the beginning of a story I didn’t know God was creating.
Have you ever had to pivot?
I’m currently living in a pivotal moment. You could not have told this 29-year-old that she would not be working in childcare. As a little girl, I would take really good care of my baby dolls, and at times act as a teacher sitting with stuffed animals in a circle grading papers. I began babysitting at the age of 13. Throughout my childcare journey, I enjoyed watching children grow and develop. However, it recently became a struggle to enjoy working in childcare. I knew something had to change so I wouldn’t lose the passion I had for kids. So, I took a pivot into the administration space.
Now that I am fully immersed in this space, I enjoy it here. It has taught me so much and showed me that there is so much more in me. It has been a learning process and a confident booster at the same time. I can often feel inadequate, but I am a consistent learner. However, I’ve leaned into the fact that I am the Change Agent and have a lot to offer.
