We were lucky to catch up with Miranda Veide recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Miranda, thanks for joining us today. Almost all entrepreneurs have had to decide whether to start now or later? There are always pros and cons for waiting and so we’d love to hear what you think about your decision in retrospect. If you could go back in time, would you have started your business sooner, later or at the exact time you started?
I started my business when my first son was just shy of two months old, 8 weeks,
backstory : When my husband and I got married we knew we wanted to start trying for our family right away.
Unfortunately things didn’t go as planned, and we had fertility issues, which lead us to a fertility clinic for help.
We were a fairly healthy couple, and never saw this coming. To help along the way we dabbled in holistic treatments along with the treatments from the clinic. Trying to boost our chances, and give it our all.
2 years later I was introduced to the power of essential oils.
I started using them day and night, mainly to just help cope with my emotional health.
year 3, we were pregnant with our first baby boy.
I swore by the magic of these essential oils and became more and more knowledgeable with their use.
During my pregnancy I was enjoying creating gifts using these potions, bath salts, body butters, and then aromatherapy bracelets.
and that’s where it started…
these little aromatherapy bracelets everyone wanted a piece of,
and a few months later, a small business was formed.
Perfect timing, as I was on mat leave, just soaking up the fourth trimester and learning the ins and outs of becoming a new mama,
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I create gemstone aromatherapy, I believe in the power of crystals and that we should utilize them for their natural healing properties. Paired with aromatherapy beads, this combination makes them the ultimate healing jewelry that makes the perfect gift for a loved one,
or for yourself.
We also love to see what our customers can create, by hosting make and take parties for small gatherings and parties.
Our technique may be a little different from others as we like to get you to create your own personal gemstone bracelet before we
allow you to see the gemstones/crystals you have chosen. There is something about seeing that AHH HAA moment after that warms my heart.
I am a small business owner, I work from home days, nights, naptimes and around my now family of 5’s schedule.
It is my biggest challenge when it comes to business, but my WHY is my reminder of why I do what I do,
I am a mother first and foremost, and a business owner second.
We as a family work together to make this business come to life,
you will always see my husband and boys… 3 boys… on my business page and my website.
They are my number one fans, and they are a huge part of everything that I bring to the shop.
aka – tie-dye, apparel, and our new boutique items that are on brand.
How did you build your audience on social media?
Social media, to someone back in 2016.. that was one scary word. Instagram was still pretty new, and we were not very tech friendly, or open to sharing bits of our lives to strangers on the internet.
Things started slowly when it came to posting some filtered photos of my work, maybe a selfie or two, but then a good friend suggested opening up a bit more, sharing more family photos, of what its like working from home with littles, the struggles, the behind the scenes, and things that our followers can relate too!
So that is exactly what I began doing,
I started showing face in my stories, sharing my plans for that day, sharing my struggles with working from home, struggles with battling infertility ( which is something I never would have put on the internet the first time around )
and once I did that… the comments, the messages, the strangers that could relate started messaging me, and there we had it,
I was building a following, a community, I was building friendships.
My advice is give it your all, be transparent, let others know you are a person behind the account.
You have struggles, you have wins and failures, we are all on here for the same purpose.
connection.
What else should we know about how you took your side hustle and scaled it up into what it is today?
My own small business lead me to meet some pretty amazing people, and other like minded small business owners, when I started my journey in joining in person markets…
I met a mama at a yoga studio, and we connected instantly.
Both mamas trying to run our small businesses from home, while parenting and being there 100% of the time for our littles.
We shared the same struggles, values, and became each others support system.
This mama ran in person markets in the Niagara region, supporting small business owners like myself, and shared the love in shopping local.
With wanting to expand her family, she was looking for someone with the same values to join her on this journey.
There was when Little Hearts Markets was built.
we were just two mothers who wanted to work from home trying to support our growing families,
that had the same core values and wanted to support as many local businesses as possible.
So today, To The Moon and Back has grown to be a small business that has helped me grow a positive community, friendships, and another small business adventure with my best friend and co owner for Little Hearts Markets in the Niagara region.
