We recently connected with Miranda Savage and have shared our conversation below.
Miranda, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. One of the most important things we can do as business owners is ensure that our customers feel appreciated. What’s something you’ve done or seen a business owner do to help a customer feel valued?
Thanks for having me! When I finish a project I like to give my clients a gift! This is my way of saying thank you for trusting me with your home and creating a space you will love for many years to come. In design, we spend a lot of time with our clients and really get to know them, and their family, well over the months we work together. To say thank you, I hand pour a scented candle and personalize the votive with something that is unique about them. For example, one of my clients had two French Bull Dogs, their pride and joy, so I put a silhouette of a Frenchie on the front of their candle! This doubles as a thoughtful gift for my clients, and a conversation starter piece in their home, thus, when they entertain and someone asks where they got the cute candle from, they mention me!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
Since I was a young child, I spent my free-time decorating my doll houses and personalizing them. I saved up my allowance to go to craft stores and buy patterned paper to add wallpaper or flooring to my doll’s homes. As I grew up, I discovered the game “Sim’s” where I was able to decorate endless homes and customize furniture, and even create homes or commercial spaces, from scratch, on an empty lot. As a young adult, I discovered the Interior Design industry and knew it was my calling to purse a living in this space.
I moved across the country and went to school, graduated with my degree in Interior Design, and spent the next few years working for high-end luxury interior designers. I learned so much along the way, and realized my greatest asset to the industry, 3D visualization, wasn’t being utilized at these firms. So, I decided to start my own Interior Design business, focusing on the benefits of 3D visualization for my clients and other designers.
I offer two services: 1) full service design for homeowners, showcasing their future space with 3D photorealistic renderings. 2) 2D drafting and 3D renderings for other designers in order to elevate their brand. I consistently receive feedback about how easy it is to understand the design direction and commit to moving forward.
Offering the 3D visualization service sets me apart from my competition, and allows me to take on projects out of state for homeowners and other designers around the country.
We’d love to hear the story of how you turned a side-hustle into a something much bigger.
While working full time for other interior designers, I started my side business of offering 3D photorealistic renderings to other designers and homeowners. I started with creating content for my website and social media, and then began reaching out to designers I found on google. I set up discovery calls with anyone who was interested and told them a little about my service and benefits of having a 3D photorealistic rendering of their design before they invested in purchasing materials or labor.
This service allows everyone involved in a project to be on the same page with the end result. It eliminates waste by knowing exactly what things will look when they arrive, rather than having an unpleasant surprise which often ends up in a landfill. It also gives clients peace of mind and something to hold onto and look forward to during the construction project.
After 6 months of pursing my side hustle, it began to take off and I wasn’t able to maintain my full time job. I took the leap of faith in myself and stepped away from the 9-5 grind and fully committed to my business. A year later I am thriving and buying my first home!
We’d really appreciate if you could talk to us about how you figured out the manufacturing process.
I create all of my own designs and renderings. In school we learned how to use SketchUp which is a 3D modeling software. We did not learn how to render our models and create photorealistic images. During a “rabbit hole” google search, I discovered many different software that are compatible with SketchUp and produce photorealistic renderings. I have purchased and used many different software to create polished renderings before I settled on V-ray, my current rendering software. I am completely self taught when it comes to rendering, having logged many hours on Youtube tutorials and online courses. I have my eye on a different software for modeling and may invest the time and money to learn this new platform down the road, as I always strive to be better than my competitors. My 2 year goal is to provide a fully immersive virtual reality experience inside your model, allowing clients to “walk through” their new space.
