We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Miranda Meyer. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Miranda below.
Miranda , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Was there an experience or lesson you learned at a previous job that’s benefited your career afterwards?
I started my career as a nutritionist in a busy functional medicine practice here in Denver. It was a very high volume practice, and I had between 15 and 30 minutes for follow ups with patients. This meant I had to run through a symptom checklist, what they were eating, how they were feeling, and update their meal plan plus supplement recommendations in an incredibly short amount of time… The result? I missed things. A LOT of things. Symptoms, comments, and clues that could have helped me get to the root cause of their chronic health issues.
Then I hit a point where I was burned out mentally and could no longer be emotionally available to truly connect with my clients. That’s when I knew things needed to change. I took the leap and failed forward through the process of starting a business, so I could take control of my schedule and approach to client care. I’m still profoundly grateful for my time at that busy practice. I learned a lot from the Doctors there and I learned a lot from my mistakes. Most importantly, I learned how to take care of myself so I could better care for my clients.
Miranda , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’ve been in the healthcare field for over 15 years. Originally I thought I was going to be a mental health therapist, then shifted my path to occupational therapy. But after working in various positions in the medical field, I realized I was seeing a system of sick care, not healthcare. And I wanted no part of that!
It was really my own health issues that started my journey into nutrition and functional medicine . Over the years, I worked with naturopaths, nutritionists, and functional medicine doctors. I was diagnosed with MCAS (mast cell activation syndrome), small intestinal bacterial overgrowth, an immune reaction to gluten, and various food sensitivities. I dug deep into root causes of these issues, and learned to use food, lifestyle changes, and supplements to rebalance her body. The results were life changing, and I knew I had found my calling.
After graduating from the Nutrition Therapy Institute in 2012, I went on to become a Restorative Wellness Solutions Certified Practitioner and certified personal trainer. I have also completed functional medicine certifications in Functional Blood Chemistry Analysis; Mastering the Thyroid; and The Gluten, Leaky Gut, Autoimmune Connection.
I’m extremely passionate about educating and empowering others to take control of their health! I continue to explore ways to further my own well-being through food, mindfulness, yoga, and outdoor adventures.
Other than training/knowledge, what do you think is most helpful for succeeding in your field?
You have to recognize when to wear your “Practitioner” hat and when to put on your coaching hat. In my mind, they’re different. You can have all the knowledge and certifications in the world, but if you can’t recognize client hurdles and help them navigate challenges, you’re not going to get results! The keys are active listening and helping clients problem solve so they can be successful.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Word of mouth, hands down. A prospective client who knows someone that’s worked with you, or has first hand experience with you, is very likely to become a paying client, in my experience. It really comes down to your ability to connect with people and make them feel seen and heard.
