We recently connected with Miranda Grubb and have shared our conversation below.
Miranda, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Parents can play a significant role in affecting how our lives and careers turn out – and so we think it’s important to look back and have conversations about what our parents did that affected us positive (or negatively) so that we can learn from the billions of experiences in each generation. What’s something you feel your parents did right that impacted you positively.
My parents are my biggest role models and supporters. They have done so many incredible things “right” that it’s hard to choose just one. My parents are currently entrepreneurs but that wasn’t always the case. The best move my parents made in life was choosing themselves and their happiness which meant opening their own businesses.
As a super young child my mother worked part time for a family business on my dad’s side of the family and was a stay at home mom. At that time in life my dad was a financial director for a large car dealership. My dad had worked for others most of his life and though he was very successful, he was not happy. My dad explained to me when I got older that no amount of money or feeling of security was worth losing out on personal time with his family. My dad also had a dream of utilizing his talents and love for motorcycles to create a new life of freedom. This decision turned into building his legacy as one of the best custom bike builders in the US. My mother continued to raise my sister and I but also took on a big role behind the scenes of running the business as well. All of this has now turned into my parents co-owning and running 4 businesses and celebrating 23 years as business owners.
Ultimately what my parents “did right” was a major impact on me because they showed me anything is possible. My parents unintentionally are the reason I decided the path of entrepreneurship and will never look back. My morals and values have lead me to where I am and that all comes from them.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
My name is Miranda Grubb and I am the owner of Rōz Event Planning. I am Colorado born and raised but I am a fierce mix of Native American and Latin cultures which is a huge part of my brand. My family is full of generations of entrepreneurs and I never thought I would be added to that list. I have a long, eventful story of how I got into the wedding and event industry but I will try to keep that short.
I have always been very creative but not someone who could make great physical art. I always enjoyed attending events and helping out anywhere I could growing up. I kind of always knew the event industry would be my future and decided to further that passion in college. Before starting college I started working in the industry with a catering company to get my foot in the door. I continued my experience in the industry all throughout college and took every job and internship that I had time for. I tried to gain a well rounded work experience while getting my education to best prepare myself for the future and set myself apart. I graduated with my Bachelor’s in Event & Meeting Management with a minor in Beverage Management from Metro State Denver in 2018.
During my first year out of college I landed some amazing opportunities in the industry but something was still not right. I am not very patient and I hate not having a solid plan. Though I am forever grateful for every work experience, I quickly learned I am very much like my father and the fathers before him. What I mean by that statement is that I am not fulfilled by having a boss, and I am much better at being the boss. After graduating, buying a dream car of mine, and buying my first home with my now husband, it was time to continue on with dreams in a different form. As a birthday gift to myself in November of 2019, I quit my job and established Rōz Event Planning LLC. I am now going into my 10th wedding season in the industry and my 3rd season as a business owner.
Rōz Event Planning was born out of my love for the industry and determination to make waves in that industry. I have had so many experiences filled with positivity but also lots of negatives. I endured lots of judgment during my work history for many reasons. I was always the youngest in my major roles for other companies and being an indigenous woman really made me the odd one out. I was constantly treated poorly in a white dominated industry that was also mostly older people with very different economical backgrounds. If you know me, I am not one to stay quiet when I feel I have been wronged or see wrong, and that characteristic isn’t usually welcomed. I first birthed Rōz Event Planning out of frustration and anger. I wanted to prove to myself and others that I was just as good, if not better than what was out there. I quickly realized that I had no one to prove anything to other than myself. I shifted my focus to creating a brand that would give clients like me someone they could trust. My brand is one that I want to be known for fresh concepts and creativity but one that is also morally sound (trust me that is rare).
Rōz Event Planning provides unparalleled, planning and design services for weddings, special events, and creative projects for extraordinary people. Most importantly, Rōz Event Planning welcomes diversity and challenging norms. Rōz Event Planning is not for everyone because it is not like everyone.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I was once told by a business leader that “others’ opinions of you are none of your business”. It took me a hot minute to grasp that concept. So, I will only speak on the reputation that I think I have from what has been said directly to me.
As far as I know, I have a solid reputation in my industry. There are ALWAYS haters in every part of life and I have had those people try to make some weird lies to “ruin” my reputation. The thing is, people can do whatever they’d like to trash my name but the real supporters know the truth and its not worth my time trying to convince anyone of anything. I’d say that my reputation is built off of my genuine connections and my hard work. You can’t fake the results and my work speaks for itself. I am not perfect in anyway but I do try to always put my best work out and learn from anything less. I am always 100% myself and what you see is what you get and what everyone else gets too. Authenticity is the foundation of my brand and reputation.
Any advice for managing a team?
I do not have a staff or team in the traditional sense but majority of my job is managing people. As a planner and coordinator, I am always managing new teams of event vendors and also managing family and friends of my clients.
My best piece of advice is to always keep communication open and honest. In every relationship type communication is key and that will never change. Learning ways to communicate effectively will be the best thing you can do!
Being honest is just always a given. If something isn’t going according to plan, the only way to fix it is to be honest about the issues at hand. On the flip side, if things are going great, you have to be honest about that too in order to keep the momentum. When talking about morale, it won’t always be high, it’ll be a roller-coaster. Being someone who can think fast and communicate effectively will create trust and in return, morale will always be recoverable.
