We were lucky to catch up with Miranda Gadbury recently and have shared our conversation below.
Miranda, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Have you been able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen? Was it like that from day one? If not, what were some of the major steps and milestones and do you think you could have sped up the process somehow knowing what you know now?
About 2 1/2 years ago I snapped. I was six months pregnant. I was working for someone else and it was getting under my skin. The thought of being required to trade my time for money and miss my kids grow up pissed me off. Next thing I know I was standing in my HR office putting my resignation in to be effective immediately. It was like I was being pulled. I knew what I was doing but it felt like I was in a dream.
My family and husband freaked out! They told me it was the hormones from my pregnancy and that my boss would understand if I explained and asked for my job back.
I refused, because it wasn’t the hormones. It was that I hated having to conform to someone else when I was capable of creating a vision and executing it to produce a life I loved.
I understood all of the concerns from my loved ones so, I requested a two month period of silence about my decision and in that two months if I didn’t make any money I would ask for my job back.
Let me tell you!
I. WAS. NOT. GOING. BACK! I searched online for a coach to teach me the ropes of running a photography business, invested in online education, everything from social media to full out web design. I took course on communications and so much more. That two months was the most productive I had ever been.
I networked everywhere. At the doctors office, at the grocery store, scam calls, everything was an opportunity to perfect my pitch and to speak about my business. So many of my original clients are still with me today even though my niche has changed many times and drastically.
Now, I serve the hungry, the go-getters the people ready to transform their lives and craft themselves into the best versions of themselves. I’ve gone from photographing anything people would pay me for ( in the beginning my rate was $25 per session) to landing my dream clients who need creative content, brand direction and a clear path to their goals. My all inclusive photography sessions start at $3500. I also offer various
À La Cart service such as private coaching, planning, model test shoots, headshots and digitals.
I’ve been able to achieve this by growing my own value. I am constantly researching better ways to serve my clients. I’m obsessed with their needs! I’m also not afraid to pivot when needed. I’m always trying something new.
Miranda, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I work with models, photographers and other creatives such a influencers. Anyone that has a talent and wants to learn how to grow it to earn a full time income.
I’ve created a solid team of talented vendors that are dedicated to excellence while onset with our clients. However; what sets me apart from other photographers or coaching programs is that I’m dedicated to finding the authentic brand and talents my clients already have to produce their desired results.
The Gadbury Co. isn’t just about beautiful images, we are about crafting a wildly fulfilling life full of joy.
We believe you get there by being true to your dreams no matter how scary it may feel, even if everyone is doubting you.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
“Be realistic!”
Respectfully, F-that.
My entire life I was trained to be realistic, to stop having an out of this world imagination and to stop thinking I could be the exception.
It was when I refused to conform with realistic expectations that I broke my mold and was able to create on the spot success for myself and my clients. If you’re realistic you stop seeing loopholes, opportunities, and creative solutions to problems. I had to understand that my brain and way of being was different for a reason. Then, I leaned into it!
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
I must say, people find Tony Robbins controversial but he has been a huge part of my growth and ability to persevere when things get hard.
I listen to his podcast, bought his courses and I’m attending his live event in Dallas next month because he provides tools that no one else can deliver like he can.
I’m huge into “self help” education and it’s always been the best investment.
