We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Miranda Edwards a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Miranda thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. The first dollar your business earns is always special and we’d love to hear how your brand made its first dollar of revenue.
I was 17 years old, just learning how to bake. I had only a few tools and was watching YouTube videos to help me learn to bake. My mom’s friend was getting married, and I asked her if she would give me the opportunity to bake her wedding cake. I bought my first set of tiered pans, looked up multiple recipes, and baked all day and night. I ended up dropping one the bigger tiers and had to remake and try to get the cake done in time. I ended up using fresh tulips on the cake and that’s when I decided I wanted all my cakes to have beautiful fresh florals on them. This was a fire that lit up in me and it took off from there. The next few years after that I made cakes for friends and family until my business took off. I now enjoy making art out of my cakes focusing on wedding baking and seeing the beauty that comes from flour and flowers.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Miranda I am first a wife and a mom of 3 beautiful babies all under 6. I got into baking by watching my mother-in-law decorate cupcakes and my passion started. I started watching videos to learn every technique and recipe I could. I started baking full time when we had our second child and took the risk stayed home full time with my kids and started baking full time. I focus on wedding baking just because I get the most satisfaction out of my wedding cakes as they are all put together. Wedding cakes are my favorite with how beautiful, elegant, and how stunning a cake can be. I am known for using fresh florals on my wedding cakes and I believe they just make a cake sparkle and come together so perfectly. I strive to make not just cakes but a beautiful piece of art you can showcase at your wedding and get to eat something tasty as well. I want to change the idea of what wedding cakes are. I think they can be a focal point of beauty when you walk into a reception. I also make other desserts like churros, pie pops, macaron towers, and anything sweet. I love what I do and I love that it shows through.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I worked really hard by using hashtags, replying to people, friending people, but I found what helped me the most was working with vendors that want to help you grow as we help them grow. I started working on styled shoots and realized what it meant to have a team behind you. How quick your business can grow when you have vendors that tell their clients about you. I still am not the best at social media and it’s hard to find the time, but I work hard to post and to advertise the companies I love so that we can all continue to grow together.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
The best source of new clients has been creating relationships with other small businesses and vendors. When you create something magical that tastes amazing and looks breathtaking the vendors around you will try your goods and will recommend you to their clients. As we grow our own business, we help others grow theirs. Just that word of mouth has brought so much business and its business that has been earned by creating quality goods. Those vendors will continue to promote your business and bring new clients as well as recurring clients. Those Vendors even become clients.
