Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Miranda Ebner. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Miranda, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
I am not unique to say that my biggest risk was leaving the warm security of a full-time corporate job to jump into the depths of the unknown with starting a small business.
When I saw this print is called CanvasRebel, the word Rebel really speaks to me personally. I’ve always been a bit of a rebel. Though a straight-A, varsity tennis player, I was bit of a rebel child to my parents; a little (okay a lot) sassy and I liked to challenge the hierarchy. I was a bit of a rebel with my peers, never really fitting into a single clique. I was a drifter of sorts not willing to bend to fit into a specific social mold. I also knew that the 9-5 grind of corporate life we’re supposed to embrace when we grow up just wasn’t for me. I knew one day I needed to work at a place where I ran the show. A place where I had the creative freedom I craved and I didn’t have multiple layers of out-of-touch bosses making judgements about my work or making up rules for a position they knew nothing about.
Leaving that consistent, comfortable corporate atmosphere was what my soul needed because to me, it was also a place that felt stifling. Unfortunately I can’t say that I ripped the bandaid off and made a dramatic meme-worthy exit. Instead I had been plotting my escape for a long time. I was slowly building my new business website after work, searching for part-time work and researched places to give presentations to connect with potential future clients.
When the day I put my two-week notice came (basically when I felt like I couldn’t take it anymore after years of taking it one day at a time), I was equally giddy and riddled with anxiety because I knew once I left, there was no turning back. I HAD to make my new business venture work.
Currently I am 8 years in and I’ve worked hard at providing compassionate, expert and heartfelt care to my clients. In the beginning I provided many free seminars and had 3 part time jobs to cover expenses. I’ve been able to slowly grow my base and have been able to hire a few independent contractors. I now have a strategy in place to grow even more with website SEO help and am starting to contract with medical insurance. It’s been a ton of work, lots of learning and sometimes uncertain, but it’s been an exciting journey. I know that what I am doing is helping me make the most positive impact on my clients’ lives too, which makes it all work it a thousand times over.

Miranda, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am the owner of a functional medicine nutrition practice and a licensed nutritionist. Myself and my other nutrition professionals work on a variety of health conditions in a telehealth setting – phone or televideo. We help clients determine how to reach their health goals and provide support, guidance and accountability along the way.
How do you keep your team’s morale high?
Be kind, curious and assume direct reports are trying their best.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
We pride ourselves in developing a meaningful partnership with our clients in their health journey. We often hear from clients that their prior experience with a nutritionist or dietician was more hands off: they would visit the nutrition professional once a month, get instructions and was expected to navigate everything between appointments on their own. Our philosophy is to be in the weekly trenches with our clients so they can feel supported throughout the whole journey.
We’re also working on taking major medical insurance carriers which will further build our reputation as well as accessibility.
