We were lucky to catch up with Miranda Des Islets recently and have shared our conversation below.
Miranda , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Some of the most interesting parts of our journey emerge from areas where we believe something that most people in our industry do not – do you have something like that?
Something that I believe that goes somewhat against the grain is that you do not have to stick with one medium. I feel that the intention with starting a small business is great, but can lead to burn out just like any other profession, and in order to avoid that you have to keep creating, and keep growing.
There’s no such thing as an over saturated market if you can create your own specific niche. Creativity is expressed in so many ways and inspiration is everywhere, so instead of trying to fix and tweak your creations to fit into this box society has created, just let yourself be free from any boundaries. For example, I am a florist, but I am also a jewelry maker, and a painter…. All these trades come into play in my small business- allowing me to express myself and art in a variety of mediums just with a main focal point: flowers.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Hello there! My name is Miranda, but you can call me Randy. I’ve been a self-taught florist for nine years now and have gained a wealth of experience from working behind the scenes in the florist industry. My specialty is color theory, and I take pride in creating unique and stunning floral arrangements that combine a variety of colors.
Aside from being a florist, I’m a mother, a wife, and a warrior living with multiple sclerosis (MS). My personal experiences have taught me that nothing is impossible, and I’m passionate about encouraging others to pursue their dreams, no matter what obstacles they may face.
I’m the founder and owner of des Islets Florist and Gifts, and I’m dedicated to providing my clients with exceptional service and beautiful floral designs that make their day. Between my background in art, customer service and marketing, I aim to create the best experience possible for each one of my customers and clients,
des Islets Florist and Gifts was created as a way to push myself to get “out there” and finally put my dreams on paper, so to speak. I consider boutique-style floral shop that blends vintage aesthetics with a modern twist. Our floral arrangements are not your grandmother’s flowers – they’re fresh, vibrant, and designed with a unique artistic eye. I specialize in color theory, creating arrangements that harmonize hues and textures in unexpected ways. We offer a wide range of services, from bridal showers to flower bars, to help you add a touch of natural beauty to any occasion.
As a way to allow myself creative freedom I also create jewelry, paintings (primary collage style), and other floral inspired gifts. As stated above- I am a mother of 2 young ones, I want to set an example of hard work, dedication, rising above the odds, and the power of creation for them. Having MS can be a challenge, and it can be hard to do all the things I want to. That being said, when the drive to succeed is as important as it is with me, anything is possible-that’s exactly the message we want to convey.

Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
Besides word of mouth, I have found that physically being in front of clients with my products, say out at a pop up, or while at a consultation, is the best way to grow my customer base.
Being authentic and present while talking about my business conveys a level of passion you simply can’t get through social media platforms or websites. Call me old fashioned (lol)
I have been able to create a community of fellow vendors, friends, and return customers just being present and putting in the man-hours,

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Always being able to learn is key in life-especially when you own a small business. Like anyone, I have my strengths and weaknesses, and there’s always room for growth. When I’m able to be honest with my clients it builds credibility and trust. For example, I am not comfortable with doing large weddings yet, I’ve always found it to be too much pressure. and usually recommended another local florist who specializes in large weddings. I don’t see this as passing up a sale- just maintaining business integrity-which in turn builds business reputation.
