However, life took an unexpected turn when the COVID-19 pandemic hit, leading to a temporary furlough. During this period, instead of taking a break, I chose to channel my energies into what had been a side hustle. Each day, I maintained a disciplined schedule, working from my desk from 9 to 5, not only to keep a sense of normalcy but to lay the foundation for something new.
This time allowed me to transform my side project into a full-fledged business. I meticulously built out all the necessary components: I developed a website, drafted a business plan, and went through the formalities of setting up an LLC. This structured approach helped me launch my venture with a clear vision.
The launch was more successful than I had ever anticipated. What started merely as a way to fill time blossomed into a thriving boutique marketing agency. I chose not to return to my corporate job, as my business had kicked off in such an unexpected and rewarding way. Today, Maven Marketing & Co. is not just a business; it’s a passion-driven boutique agency with a dedicated team of six, serving over 20 clients nationwide. Our work makes a tangible impact, reflecting the dedication and love that we pour into every project. Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Embarking on the entrepreneurial journey with Maven Marketing & Co. has been anything but smooth, which is often the case in entrepreneurship. The road was filled with learning curves and challenges that required me to quickly adapt and acquire a wide range of skills.
One of the initial hurdles was learning to wear many hats simultaneously. As the founder, I had to understand and manage diverse aspects of the business that I hadn’t dealt with before. This included drafting contracts, managing payroll, invoicing clients, setting up efficient project management systems, and determining the pricing for our services. Each of these tasks was crucial in establishing a firm foundation for the business.
The complexity of these tasks made the journey challenging, but it also contributed significantly to my growth as a business owner. It has sculpted me into a dynamic individual, capable of handling various facets of a business with confidence. Looking back, I am immensely thankful for these challenges. They not only strengthened my capabilities but also enriched my understanding of running a successful agency. One of the most significant risks I faced was the decision to hire full-time team members at a point when our client capacity might not have fully justified the expansion. This was a strategic gamble, as the financial implications were considerable. The potential risks included the failure of the company and a detrimental impact on our bottom line. However, my vision was focused on the long-term benefits of building a robust team, which would be crucial for the agency’s growth and sustainability.
Choosing to invest in talent ahead of immediate demand was a calculated risk that required a deep understanding of our market potential and faith in our business model.
