We recently connected with Miracle Skin and have shared our conversation below.
Miracle, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Coming up with the idea is so exciting, but then comes the hard part – executing. Too often the media ignores the execution part and goes from idea to success, skipping over the nitty, gritty details of executing in the early days. We think that’s a disservice both to the entrepreneurs who built something amazing as well as the public who isn’t getting a realistic picture of what it takes to succeed. So, we’d really appreciate if you could open up about your execution story – how did you go from idea to execution?
It was mid February pre-pandemic that I told my nephew I would make him something to help his little feet. Eczema took over his little toes and heels making them crack and bleed. Milan was only 5 at the time and he loved going outside and playing with his big brother. The eczema made his running around the yard and nights sleeping almost impossible. He must have overheard me telling my sister that I would make something to help him. He came over to me and in the sweetest little crying voice said: “Teka (what he calls me) when will you make something to fix my feet”. I have always been a fan of plant based remedies but lacked a lot of knowledge in the field. I started research and testing and within a month and a half had the first sample finished. Milan was going to be my first test. Within days of using what was later named “Miracle Butter” Milan’s feet were improving. After about 10 days the eczema he struggled with for 2 years was completely gone. I often second guess myself and figured maybe this was just coincidence. I changed the recipe a smidge to fix any small imperfections relating to consistency and texture. I was giving them away to friends, family as well as any nurses dealing with dry hands from constant washing and sanitizing due to the pandemic.
The feedback was incredible. I was getting before and after photos relating to eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, allergy reactions, acne and many more. People wanted to purchase my product, I was blown away. I started taking orders over social media and referrals and would deliver them myself. It started to get so popular that I decided it was time to make a website. I taught myself how to use photoshop and illustrator in order to do my own graphic and website design.
I found suppliers for ingredients and packaging throughout my research and had a pretty solid foundation for everything I needed in my business. For a year I only sold Miracle Butter, it was doing so well I knew it was time to expand. I knew in order to expand I would want a partner to not only assist in the workload but also share their ideas with me. I invited my lifelong friend Ana, who was one of the first people to introduce me to plant based products. Ana has great ideas and dreams which is great for a practical person such as myself. She created great products such as the rose Face Oil, which is one of our most popular products. We expanded into a full skin care line that includes medicinal as well as every day skin care products.
Miracle, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Tanja Petrovic, I was born and raised in former Yugoslavia. Ana Velimirovic is my wonderful partner who was also born in Yugoslavia. In our culture natural remedies are part of daily life so we find ourselves often using them without even realizing it. We own Miracle Skin Inc, a plant based skin-care company. Our story is about a never-ending quest for clean, nourishing beauty and wellness products that would work for our skin. This journey brought us to a realization that we had to take matters into our own hands and design the products that would heal and naturally awaken our skin.
Inspired by nature and its potent ingredients, Miracle Skin products promote healthy, radiant skin. We believe in the power of plants and what Mother Earth can provide. These formulations are just the beginning, as we continue to research and discover other botanical powerhouses.
We make products that aid in the healing of eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, acne, scaring, and any irritations on the skin that may be related to allergy reactions, bug bites, dry skin etc.
We started this company to help people without them having side effects that prescriptions and medications may have. Safe enough for sensitive skin and to use on babies and children.
Our mission is to support Earth, to celebrate self-love through healing and make your journey beautiful.
How’d you meet your business partner?
I met Ana soon after I moved to Canada. We’ve now known each other for over 21 years. She has become my family and her sweet daughters my nieces. Ana and I got really close about 8 years ago and we shared a common adoration for all things food. Ana is a pastry chef and makes some of the most incredible desserts I have ever had. She is the type of baker that can just work with the ingredients she has without ever having to look at a recipe. Her love for pastries and my love for cooking lead us on a path of potentially opening our own cafe bistro. After much planning and creating the pandemic put that on hold which lead us to where we are today.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
Ana & I worked in service most of our lives. If you take care of your customers they will show you their appreciation. We offer advice and try to help our clientele find the best product for them. We often have people writing in to us and we try to be very attentive. When dealing with skin issues people often feel helpless. Our skin can be our biggest insecurity. Offering guidance to a person in a stressful situation shows the human side of business. We are not just a company or a website. We are two human beings who have dealt with similar situations and understand the stress behind it.
