Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Mira Jackson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Mira thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
It all started during Ramadan. I was really experimenting with new recipes and trying to execute some more traditional dishes. I was cooking and baking so much, perfecting my baklava too, and one of my children asked if I could make donuts. I have NEVER made donuts before but I knew the texture that I enjoyed the most. I liked that yeasty, fluffy fresh bakery donut that didn’t feel like you were eating something overly sugary. I wanted to replicate that so I started experimenting until I came up with the perfect recipe that gave me a fluffy bread! And I think everyone can agree that maple bacon donuts are in the top 3 best donuts of all time, so as a Muslim, I wanted to make a halal maple bacon donuts. It was a MASSIVE success with my friends and family.

Mira, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a baker who focuses on providing people with safe ingredients. Whether you adhere to a halal diet or a biblical diet, or you avoid artificial dyes and flavors, I can assure you my sweets will satisfy your cravings and put your worries at bay! You won’t need to scour the ingredients list to make sure it’s safe to eat; I’ve done that for you. As a mother who is conscious of the things my family puts in their bodies, I want to also afford the same to your family. I care deeply for our community’s collective health and with that I believe we should be able to have a sweet treat without compromising our health and the convictions we so sincerely hold.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Complete transparency and honesty is what keeps my reputation in tact and in good standing with my audience and customers. I am also not afraid to donate my product and my time when I can because I am a firm believer in charity. I don’t see giving charity as a loss in the monetary sense as it is a replenishment for the soul. One of the most important values to me as a small business owner in a relatively small town is that people can trust the quality of my product and trust me as a person. The energy I put into my business should be centered around abundance and a giving spirit in hopes that that energy can then be passed to my community, helping to make this place better than where I found it.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
As I was first starting out, I was offering very outrageous incentives and opportunities for people to try out as many of my flavors as possible when it came to my donuts. I was giving dozens of dozens away at a massive discount and allowing complete customization up to the customer. It was a lot to manage! Several orders a day with dozens of donuts, all unique flavors. And I never wanted to compromise quality. I was running on a couple of hours of sleep per day! But it was in the long run helpful as my clientele then knew their favorite flavors. I got through those specials and I gained a lot of respect and repeat customers.
