We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Mint Moving. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Mint below.
Hi Mint, thanks for joining us today. So, naming is such a challenge. How did you come up with the name of your brand?
There wasn’t any “A-ha” moment where our name came to us. We had a group brainstorm to come up with a giant list of potential names. No idea was off the table. After this brainstorming session, we decided to take a road trip out West, during which time we would widdle down our choices and the choice would become clear to us. The trip was incredible, but the company name discussions got put on the backburner. We returned a week later with less of a clue than when we left.
As we thought through the list more and widdled it down, the name Mint just kept coming up, specifically the tagline “Refreshingly Simple”. Based on our past experiences in the industry and through hearing stories through the grapevine, it became clear that their was a lot of dishonest and/or shady practices in the undustry, which led to distrust and unfavorable opinions of moving companies. Our goal is to be upfront and personable with our clients from the first call through moving day. Transparent pricing, honest quoting, and above all excellent service. It seems simple, right?Mint Moving’s goal is to make moving day Refreshingly Simple and the least stressful part of the entire moving process.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers?
Our names are Matt Blomsness, Brian Conover, and Mike Sullivan. We all grew up in Winona, MN, about 2 hours south of the Twin Cities right along the banks of the Mississippi River. We were friends growing up and went our own ways in college, but still kept in touch. Flash forward about 5 years and we found ourselves all living in the Twin Cities area. Brian was working with a upstart moving company as a part-time job, and introduced the rest of us to it as well. What started as a part-time gig on nights and weekends to make some extra money quickly turned into something we all recognized was profitable and something we all had a natural knack for.
The company we were with closed down permanently during the summer of 2020, After being around the industry for a few years and seeing what works (and almost more importantly what doesn’t work) we started us on a path to discovering our entrepreneurial drive and desire to start our own company. We officially launched Mint Moving on January 1st, 2021 with 3 movers (ourselves), a used Uhaul truck, and a storage unit. Fast forward to almost 2 years later and we have 10 employees, 3 trucks, and our own office.
Mint Moving offers residential and commercial packing, moving and furniture removal, senior moving, and in-home labor services.. We provide free estimates and consultation to all of our prospective clients. We are licensed to move throughout the state of Minnesota, and have traveled to all corners of the state since we began. Our eventual goal is to expand beyond Minnesota and open branches in other cities around the country.
Our mission at Mint Moving is to provide clients with exceptional service and honest information from when they first reach out to when the trucks are leaving their new space on Moving Day. We have been selective in who bring on to our team beacause we want to ensure that whoever is representing Mint Moving has integrity in how they carry themselves, is a hard worker, empathetic to our clients needs, and enjoyable to be around. We could’ve likely grown quicker than we had if we did not stand by these commitments, but because we have stayed committed to these core beliefs, we have formed a crew and company culture that we are extremely proud of.
It’s been said that people’s 3 biggest fears in life are death, public speaking, and moving. We have had multiple clients tell us that the actual move itself was the least stressful part of the entire home buying and selling process. That’s become our mission for every move we do.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
In the summer of 2020 the moving company we were working for prematurely closed down and left us jobless. That summer a lot of small businesses were forced to close down due to Covid-19 and we witnessed its effects on people’s physical and mental health. With our natural aptitude for moving, trust in one another, and a shared vision for what we could build, we decided to take the risk of starting our own moving company in the very industry which we had just experienced what felt like failure.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
We initially reached out to other small businesses and clients who we worked with at our previous moving company, where we were general managers. Through that small network we were able to gain a number of 5 star Google reviews, which helped us build an online presence and reputation. With spending almost no money on advertising we were able to take on referral-based business with the three of us conducting these moves. After sending business cards to different apartment buildings, storage facilities, and senior living facilities we were able to reconnect and reintroduce ourselves under our new name.
In our industry customer service and communication are key to building a strong foundation. There are so many folks out there who have told us about their previous moving experiences that didn’t live up to expectations or some whose movers didn’t show up at all. From the moment someone submits an estimate request or calls our business line we pride ourselves on being their “moving mentors” who can provide custom moving plans to fit their specific needs. Moving is one of the most stressful experiences in one’s life with buying and selling their homes. We are here to make the moving portion of that transition the least stressful part of the process. Being communicative with prompt and thoughtful responses most definitely plays a big role in building a reputation but it is the actual move that matters most. Our team of movers, the representatives of Mint, are what allows us to obtain positive word of mouth referrals, which are a driving force for business. Every move matters to us because our lives and the reputation of our business depends on it.
