Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Minjung Ahn. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Minjung, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
One memorable tattoo I did was for a client who was traveling not only in LA but around the world.
she shared with me how their trip to Joshua Tree in LA, where they experienced the starry night sky and countless cacti, was a truly joyful experience.
She wanted a custom character tattoo to capture that memory.
For custom character designs, there are certain aspects I always need to inquire about. First, we identify the main elements the client wants (for example, the Joshua Tree cactus). Then, we focus on the desired actions or expressions to convey the right emotions, and I have a conversation with the client to understand their vision. I make sure to note any specific expressions, objects, or additional background scenes they want to include.
However, I believe that moderation is key, so I select a few elements to create a design that intuitively captures the meaning without being overly complex.
Ultimately, the cactus character tattoo we created has become one of my original characters, and it stands out among my recent works. That’s why it remains a memorable project for me.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I was deeply attracted to the idea of tattoos as a means of expressing individuality and capturing precious memories and meanings.
Having studied design at university, I naturally developed an interest in tattoos due to my passion and talent for drawing.
At that time, I had the opportunity to learn tattoo techniques from Sol Tattoo, who was a renowned tattoo artist.
I always enjoy media and games related to my work, such as games, animation, puzzles, and LEGO.
Just as popular animations and games continue to offer updates and new products, I am constantly looking to challenge myself with new ideas in tattooing.
My artistic expansion began with these hobbies.
Even with the same character, the desired features and expressions can vary widely.
This is because the points of attraction are different for everyone. Recognizing and empathizing with these points and incorporating them into my skills and color palette have become key elements of my style.
I possess a unique ability to reinterpret objects, animals, and plants as new characters. I can also reimagine existing characters with vibrant colors. I experiment with creative ideas by combining and mixing characters that clients love.
Since I also enjoy working with cute designs and diverse color palettes, I believe that those who share similar hobbies and genres will find my Instagram enjoyable.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
There are so many tattoo artists around the world.
What gives me the greatest sense of accomplishment is meeting clients who appreciate and seek out my work.
It’s a feeling of being chosen.
Because of this, I put my utmost effort into completing each piece with a sense of responsibility.
When the tattoo is finished and we look at it together in the mirror, seeing the client’s happy smile makes me forget all the challenges of the day, leaving me with only a sense of happiness.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Instagram is the only social media platform where I put in my utmost effort.
I analyze and strive daily to capture the attention of clients who share common interests with me.
I post daily updates and videos related to my work.
I’ve been consistently doing this for almost five years.
