Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Min Soo Park. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Min Soo, appreciate you joining us today. Are you able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen?
I started working as a freelance filmmaker couple of years ago. In the beginning, things weren’t easy as there wasn’t much work, and my rate was too low to support myself. However, I was determined to make it work.
During the pandemic, I traveled back to Korea for a year and started reaching out to strangers. I offered to shoot free music videos and promoted my work on Instagram, my website, and every film-related page I could find.
I started getting more work and when I returned to New York. Clients started approaching me, and my business grew through word of mouth from satisfied clients. It’s been an exciting journey, and I am still learning and growing with each project I take on. It’s fulfilling to see that I am now a full-time freelancer with a diverse range of clients and increasing work.
Min Soo, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a South Korean filmmaker based in New York City. I specialize in directing short-form videos such as short documentaries, music videos, and commercials.
By combining narrative and visual techniques, I create an immersive experience that stimulates audiences. My work often features unconventional situations and explores the complexities of the human experience through a surreal lens.
I continue to push the limits of what’s possible in my films. I have had the pleasure of working with a variety of clients, including those in the music and entertainment industries, as well as fashion and academic institutions.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
As a filmmaker, the most rewarding aspect is the ability to capture and preserve special moments and memories through my work. It’s not about technical perfection, but the emotional impact and significance of those moments.
That’s why I believe in the importance of the process more than the outcome. Through filmmaking, we have the power to make the day of people around us special and enrich our own lives with meaningful experiences.
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
Collaborating with fellow filmmakers is the resource that I wish I had utilized earlier in my journey. In the past, I worked mostly as a one-man band, but I realized the importance of having other perspectives and input on my projects.
By bringing in other filmmakers to work with me, they help me improve on my weakness. I have learned a lot and the outcomes have been significantly enhanced, leading me to grow as a filmmaker and create better work.
Also, there are some valuable online resources I wish I had discovered earlier. Platforms such as Director’s Library and Nowness have taught me a lot by exposing me to the works of other talented filmmakers.
